Importance of Being Ethical in a Tarot Reading By Poonam Beotra

Tarot readers, like any other professional healers, are bound by their own code of ethics.

The tarot readers can be trusted with the ‘very’ personal questions?

One of the most important code of conduct is, not to disclose any of the clients queries to anyone. Yes, of course, as professionals, we like to take opinions from fellow tarot readers, for their point of view, but the name of the client never crops up in the discussion. Clients are always referred to as Mr/Ms X or simply as ‘client’.

And while we readers follow a certain protocol, so should the seekers.

Don’t be a peek-a-boo.

The major point that you, as a seeker, should understand is that you cannot ask questions concerning a third party. So, a session that starts off with, “I want to do a reading for a friend who is having a troubled relationship”, is believe me, over before it has even started. And when I try explaining that, I get the vibes immediately from the client that my credibility is now going to be put under a scanner!

This was one of the biggest problems that I faced as a professional tarot reader - where to draw my boundaries with the questions asked.

Frankly speaking, when I first started my professional practice, I would take up such questions as challenging ones and to be honest, also in order to build up my clientele. But today, I do not encourage such questions because it is unethical to peep into other people’s lives without their permission. Also, when we do a reading, we need to tap into the client’s energy and bring it in sync with the universal wisdom to get the right answers. When the question is about the third person, it becomes very difficult to do so and the answers just do not resonate with the query.

How does one handle disturbed clients?

A bigger problem that we face and which is still a debatable topic in the tarot readers’ fraternity is how to proceed if during a reading we suspect the client to be disturbed, to the point of being almost suicidal. Such clients have mostly approached me online and they are obviously strangers to me. I find my tarot session turning into a counselling one. And obviously, since we are not trained to handle any form of depression, such sessions can be highly disturbing.

You see, clairvoyants are empathetic people. Their high level of intuition is directly related to their emotions. So, do we cast aside our ‘pledge’ and make an attempt to find the clients’ family/friends and explain his/her fears to them or do we inform a suicide helpline/police. Or, do we simply wait, cut our cords with the client and hope this will pass and pray that whatever message we conveyed to them through the cards, makes them take an intelligent step towards a more positive state of mind.

Tarot readers are not doctors

The same kind of uneasiness crops up for me when I am asked to do a health reading and cards that I am not overtly fond of, tumble out of the deck. I like to wriggle out of that reading by insisting that they consult a doctor (without creating panic of course).

This blog is for the clients to realise that tarot is simply a medium to guide you in the right direction in life. It cannot be used for fore-casting and it definitely is not God.
