There are a number of customs that are followed in the Indian culture. While many simply follow the rituals to uphold the tradition, there are actually scientific explanations behind these rituals!

1. Namaste- Joining Both Palms Together To Greet - In the Hindu culture, greeting by joining both the palms is meant to offer respect. That said, there is a scientific explanation behind this tradition as well. Joining both hands ensures joining the tips of all the fingers together; the fingertips are believed to be the pressure points for eyes, ears, and mind. Pressing them together is said to activate the pressure points, which helps us remember that person for a long time. And for those who are scared of picking up germs from others, this can be a great way to ensure politeness while avoiding physical contact.

2. Applying Tilak/Kumkum On The Forehead - Since ancient times, Indians have been applying tikka on the forehead, between the two eyebrows. The scientific explanation behind this ritual is that this spot is considered to be a major nerve point in human body. The Tilak or the red ‘kumkum’ between the eyebrows is said to retain energy in the human body and control the various levels of concentration. Applying kumkum on the forehead also activates the pressure points in mid-brow region and Adnya-chakra. This also helps to facilitate the blood supply to the facial muscles.

3. The Scientific Explanation Of Touching Feet (Charan Sparsh) - Usually, Charan Sparsh is done to an elder person. By touching another’s feet with the fingertips of your hand, a circuit is immediately formed and the energies of two bodies are connected. In this circuit, your fingers and palms become the ‘receptor’ of energy and the feet of other person become the ‘giver’ of energy(knowledge). This circuit also connects the two minds and hearts.

4. Toe Rings - A lot of married Indian women wear toe rings on their second toes. This tradition is followed as a particular nerve from the toes connects the uterus to the heart. Thus, wearing a toe ring on this toe helps to strength the woman’s uterus, keeping it healthy by regulating the blood flow to it. Moreover, it keeps a woman’s menstrual cycle regular. Another benefit of wearing toe rings is that the silver acts as a good conductor to absorb polar energies from the earth and pass it to the body.

5. Why Do Temples Have Bells - According to Agama Shastra, the bell is used to give sound for keeping evil forces away, and the ring of the bell is believed to please the idol of God placed in the temple. Apart from this, there is also the scientific reason behind bells, i.e their ring clears the person’s mind and helps to stay sharp. Placing it outside a temple helps the devotee keep their full concentration on the prayers and on their purpose of worship. These bells are made in such a way that when they produce a sound, it usually lasts for about 7 seconds, and creates a unity in the left and right parts of our brains. The duration of this echo helps to activate all the seven healing centres in our body. In this way, devotees are able to rid their brains of all negative thoughts.
