Amavasya 2022: Get to Know All About It

Amavasya marks the beginning of Shukla Paksha of the lunar month. According to Hinduism, it has special relevance and importance. Read to know the significance of Amavasya and the complete list of the Amavasya dates in 2022. Have a look!

Amavasya and Purnima both have special significance in Hinduism. Like a Full Moon (Purnima), the New Moon also appears every month. The Amavasya Tithi is a significant day for many spiritual activities and religious rituals.

Let's get to know more.

Amavasya: What Is It?

Amavasya is considered a crucial Tithi in the Hindu Lunar Calendar. It is also known as 'New Moon Day' or 'No Moon Day.' The reason it's called the No Moon day is that there is no Moon in the night sky or that the Moon is not visible. In Sanskrit, Amavasya means 'day of New Moon.' During the time of Amavasya, the New Moon is in an invisible phase for us, Earth dwellers. The Moon is incredibly close to the Sun during this phase, making it difficult to observe the New Moon with naked eyes. The illuminated side of the Moon is towards the Sun, which is why the Moon becomes invisible to us at night. It only starts appearing again little by little every passing day.

Amongst all the thirty Lunar Tithis or phases that make up a Lunar month in the Hindu calendar, the New Moon day is when no Moon is visible in the night sky. New Moon day or Amavasya occurs once a month. This means that twelve New Moon days are falling in an entire year, and similarly, there are twelve Full Moon days in a whole year. Amavasya marks the beginning of the bright fortnight, or as it is commonly known as Shukla Paksha, of the Lunar month. On the day of Amavasya, the Moon is not visible in the sky. In the scriptures, the Lord of the Amavasya Tithi is considered to be Pitrudev. Amavasya is the union of the Sun and Moon. On this day, both the Sun and the Moon are present in the same zodiac. Furthermore, Amavasya is also called 'Kuhu Amavasya.'

It's no surprise that Amavasya is the darkest day of the month. It is regarded as one of the most impactful times of the year. This is the biggest reason why people observe many essential rituals, customs, and traditions on this day all over India.

Is Amavasya Auspicious Or Inauspicious?

Amavasya being the darkest night is generally why most cultures and people believe that Amavasya Tithi is not considered auspicious for completing any propitious work. People commonly believe that the energies prevalent during that time can have harmful effects on an individual's mental and physical well-being. This day can also have an adverse impact on an individual's nature and behavior. It is believed that our subconscious mind is also heavily impacted on Amavasya, and it is pretty vulnerable. In astrology, it is typically believed that the Moon affects the mind. Therefore, the No Moon night makes the mind vulnerable. It is also a common belief that emotions get enhanced or peak on this particular day.

Furthermore, the night of Amavasya is considered inauspicious as people believe that evil powers are most potent at this time. Some even carry out Tantrik or black magic activities on this day. Some staunch and committed believers also avoid embarking on journeys, traveling, or going outside for work on Amavasya.

However, Amavasya has special significance in terms of spirituality. This time of the month is devoted to worshiping, offering prayers, conducting Pujas, and remembering our ancestors. On the New Moon day, many devotees observe the Amavasya Vrat (fast) for happiness, prosperity, success, and for seeking the blessings of the forefathers.

Amavasya: Significance And Importance

As mentioned above, there are twelve New Moon days or Amavasya and twelve Full Moon days in an entire year, and each has its own importance and significance. It is believed that the Amavasya and Purnima dates have a massive influence on our lives. In Hinduism, the entire day of Amavasya has enormous relevance. The Amavasya Tithi is associated with many fasts and festivals. It is believed that Amavasya is one of the most powerful and potent times of the year.

Some of the reasons why Amavasya is considered crucial are given below.

  • Of all the Amavasya days, the Amavasya, which falls on a Monday (Somvaar), is known as the Somvati Amavasya, and when it falls on Saturday, it is called Shani Amavasya. The Somvati Amavasya is thought to be the most promising. It is believed that observing a Vrat or fasting on this particular day can prove to be exceptionally meritorious for the devotees. Devotees believe that taking a sacred dip in a holy river such as the Yamuna, Ganga, etc., on this day can be quite beneficial. On the occasion of Somvati Amavasya, throngs of devotees visit religious and spiritual pilgrimage sites such as Varanasi, Haridwar, etc. Observing this day with complete devotion can lead to the fulfillment of your desires. This specific day is also considered crucial for married women as they observe the fast for the long lives of their husbands.
  • According to the Garuda Purana, a Hindu scripture, one's ancestors visit the Earth's plane on Amavasya. It is mentioned in the Puranas that by worshiping one's forefathers and donating to the poor on Amavasya, an individual's bad deeds and sins are absolved. The day of Amavasya is believed to be the appropriate day to perform Shraddh rituals to appease the ancestors and to pay homage to them. This is why this day is held in reverence by many. If we, the descendants, don't offer prayers and food to the forefathers, they will get displeased. Therefore, you must pray and seek your ancestors' blessings. Along with that, you must worship the divine Lord Vishnu for the fulfillment of your wants and desires. Worshiping the ancestors also ushers happiness and prosperity into your lives.
  • Amavasya plays a significant role in the prevention of Pitra Dosha. On this day, taking a bath with holy water, donating, and doing Tarpan are regarded as being highly beneficial and meritorious for all.
  • Taking a holy bath on this day also means that all the miseries of the person will end.
  • Amavasya is an apt day to perform the Kalsarpa Dosha Puja.
  • On this occasion, people observe fasts to seek the blessings of the Sun and Moon god.
  • The famous and the brightest 'festival of lights', Diwali, falls on Amavasya, in the month of Kartik, as per the Hindu calendar. Diwali is regarded as the darkest night of the year. It is believed that this is the night when the negative and evil powers have the strongest potential. However, this night is celebrated in India by burning diyas and putting up lights. The lights and the vibrant celebrations ward off all negative energies and evil spirits.

When it comes to Amavasya, some of the most popular and important Amavasya days are Bhaumvati Amavasya, Mauni Amavasya, Shani Jayanti, Mahalaya Amavasya (Pitru Paksha), Somvati Amavasya, Shani Amavasya, Hariyali Amavasya, Diwali Amavasya, to name a few.
