The reason it's called the No Moon day is that there is no Moon in the night sky or that the Moon is not visible. In Sanskrit, Amavasya means 'day of New Moon.' During the time of Amavasya, the New Moon is in an invisible phase for us, Earth dwellers. The Moon is incredibly close to the Sun during this phase, making it difficult to observe the New Moon with naked eyes. The illuminated side of the Moon is towards the Sun, which is why the Moon becomes invisible to us at night. It only starts appearing again little by little every passing day.

Amongst all the thirty Lunar Tithis or phases that make up a Lunar month in the Hindu calendar, the New Moon day is when no Moon is visible in the night sky. New Moon day or Amavasya occurs once a month. This means that twelve New Moon days are falling in an entire year, and similarly, there are twelve Full Moon days in a whole year. Amavasya marks the beginning of the bright fortnight, or as it is commonly known as Shukla Paksha, of the Lunar month. On the day of Amavasya, the Moon is not visible in the sky. In the scriptures, the Lord of the Amavasya Tithi is considered to be Pitrudev. Amavasya is the union of the Sun and Moon. On this day, both the Sun and the Moon are present in the same zodiac. Amavasya: Significance And Importance

As mentioned above, there are twelve New Moon days or Amavasya and twelve Full Moon days in an entire year, and each has its own importance and significance.
