Therefore, the seventh rite of the 16 rites of the Indian tradition is Annaprasan or Annaprasanam, which means to feed food. When the child turns 6 or 7 months old, he is fed a bowl of rice or any 'Satvik' grain by taking out an auspicious time and chanting. What do you understand by the word Annaprasana?

The word Annaprasanam is a combination of two Sanskrit words - "Annah" and "Prasanam." By combining the two, we find the meaning of the word Annaprasanam in English as "the process of feeding rice or grain." This popular festival is known by various names across India, such as:

Mukhebhat in West Bengal

Coronu in Kerala

 Bhat in Uttarakhand

Pasni in Nepal

Why is Annaprasan samskaras celebrated?

Celebrating Annaprasanam has the same importance in Hindu tradition as other rites performed which are religious, spiritual, and logical. The main idea behind celebrating this festival is to promote good health and proper nutrition. It has been said in the scriptures that when the infant is in the mother's womb, it also takes in the same food, which is not 'Satvik.' Therefore, through this ritual, the process of eliminating the faults of contaminated food and giving pure, 'Satvik' and nutritious food to the baby is started. This is done to ensure that the child can become strong and have good immunity. Eating solid food also makes the child's mind, body and heart healthy and strong.

How is the Annaprasana ceremony performed?

The maternal uncle of the infant performs this rite. First of all, the maternal uncle makes the baby sit on his lap and feeds him kheer or some solid food with his hands. After this, other family members also feed the child and bless them to be healthy throughout their life. A fun game is also played during this ceremony, where many symbolic items are placed in a tray such as clay, gold ornaments, pens, books, and food. First of all, the future of whoever puts his hand on it is assessed by the astrologer. It is believed that if the child touches the clay, he will have the property; if he touches the gold ornament, then there will be wealth; if he touches the pen, he will be intellectual and will be inclined towards books.
