Mohammed Aamir Hussain Khan, Bollywood’s greatest superstar, one of the finest actors and ‘the biggest movie star’ in the world, has a career span of thirty years in the film industry. He is one of the famed ‘Trio Khans of Bollywood’, the other two being Shah Rukh and Salman Khan.
Unlike ShahRukh Khan, Aamir had the advantage of being connected with the film industry, thanks to his film producer and director father, Tahir Hussain. His uncle, the famed film producer, director and screen writer, Nasir Hussain, exposed him to the world of films by giving the child Aamir, a chance to act in his super-duper film, Yaadon Ki Baaraat.
Nasir has been credited as a major trendsetter in the history of Hindi cinema. The family of Aamir was also related to the former President of India, Zakir Husain, who was known for his intellect. With such a rich gene pool, it is not surprising that Aamir has tried to make ‘intelligent’ movies.
Aamir worked his way up the career ladder with sheer hard work and determination. He spent valuable learning hours behind the sets, learning the nuance of film making while appearing for small low-budget movies. Aamir was never the macho, good looking stud, over whom the fair sex could swoon. He was always the “clean-cut, wholesome boy-next-door”, who was best at boyish romantic roles. Although quite a few of his romantic films broke box-office records, Aamir was clearly not happy with his roles of dancing around trees and with his nickname, “The Choco Boy”. This man was made of different material. Raking in money was not the objective of his life. He liked humanitarian and social causes as Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was his inspiration.
Aamir’s passion for not only acting, but also film-making, made it possible for the man to experiment in movies that had a message for the audience. His directorial debut, Taare Zameen Par in 2007, was a box-office success. Since then, Aamir, the perfectionist, has not looked back and has his own distinct brand of cinema.
Aamir is the golden boy of China, just as Raj Kapoor was of Russia. He is the only Indian actor-producer, who has taken the China box office in a storm.
Aamir made his own contribution to make a difference to journalism with his TV talk show, Satyamev Jayate, where he addressed social issues.
