Bhaiya Dooj falls on the Dwitiya of the Shukla Paksha in Karthik month. Usually, it is the fifth day after Diwali. Our Panchang says that if the Dwitiya of the Shukla Paksha falls in the fourth quarter of the day, we celebrate Bhaiya Dooj on that day. However, if the Dwitiya Tithi touches the afternoon period on both days, we celebrate Bhaiya Dooj the next day.
Bhaiya Dooj signifies the happy relationship between a brother and a sister. It is similar to Raksha Bandhan, which also glorifies the brother-sister relationship. However, there is a difference. On Raksha Bandhan, the married sister visits the brother’s house, whereas on Bhaiya Dooj, the brother visits to his sister’s home. On Raksha Bandhan, the brother promises to protect his sister. However, on Bhaiya Dooj, the sister prays for her brother's long life. While this ritual is followed across the states of India, it may differ is a few specific regions.
Our scriptures have various stories connected with Bhaiya Dooj. The most famous one is that of Yama and Yami, the children of the Lord Sun. Yamraj, the son of the Lord Sun, has a sister, Yamuna, who pesters him to visit her. Usually, no one invites Yamraj to their house. But the Yamuna did. So, Yamraj visits his sister, who feeds him out of her hands.
The Yamuna welcomes her brother, applies a Tilak on his forehead, and prays to God for his long life. Impressed by his sister’s devotion, Yama offers a boon to her. Yami says that she does not want anything from him. However, she extracts a promise from Yama that he will visit her every year. She also seeks that any sister welcoming her brother on this day and performing the rituals should never fear Yamraj, the God of Death. Yamraj grants her wish. Bhaiya Dooj is celebrated with fervor to this day. People believe that the brother-sister duo taking a dip in the holy Yamuna river on this day leads to a happy life with fewer troubles.
Another story depicts the sibling bond between Bhagwan Shri Krishna and his sister Subhadra. Legend has it that Shri Krishna visits his sister Subhadra after killing Narakasur on Naraka Chaturdashi. First, she welcomes Shri Krishna with sweets, fruits, and flowers. Then, she lights up diyas and greets him by applying a Tilak on his forehead. So, it has become a habit for sisters to invite their brothers by applying Tilak on their foreheads. The brothers present gifts to their sisters in return.
This practice has become the Bhaiya Dooj Tilak Vidhi.

Indians celebrate Bhaiya Dooj in various ways, depending on the states they reside in. Let us look at how people celebrate Bhaiya Dooj in different Indian states.
Maharashtrians refer to Bhaiya Dooj as Bhau Beej. Bhau means brother in Marathi. The Bhau Beej procedure is the same as discussed above. The sister welcomes her brother with a Tilak and performs the Puja at the appropriate Bhaiya Dooj Puja Muhurt.
Bengalis refer to Bhaiya Dooj as the Bhai Phota festival. Sisters observe a fast on this day and wait for her brother to visit her. She welcomes him by applying a Tilak on his forehead and treats him to a sumptuous lunch. The brother offers gifts to the sister.
Bihar celebrates Bhaiya Dooj uniquely. The sister calls her brother and rebukes him with the choicest abuses on Bhaiya Dooj eve. Later, she apologizes and welcomes him to visit her on Bhaiya Dooj. The tradition is that the scolding absolves the brother of all his sins. The brother visits the sister’s home on Bhaiya Dooj. She greets him by applying a Tilak on his forehead and offering him sweets and fruits. The brother gifts her profusely.
People celebrate Bhaiya Dooj the traditional way in Uttar Pradesh. The sister applies the Tilak on her brother's forehead and offers him water and sugar. Some people also provide water and coconut on this day.
The Nepalese also celebrate Bhaiya Dooj. The festival is known as Bhai Tihar. The word Tihar denotes Tilak in Nepalese. Sisters welcome their brothers and apply the Tilak on their foreheads. This Tilak is unique because it comprises seven colors. Finally, the sisters pray for their brother’s long life.
Bhaiya Dooj marks the end of the five-day-long festival that starts on Dhanteras. Every Indian awaits these five days because it enables them to forget other worries, celebrate these beautiful festivals, and have a great time. Each of these five days has a specific significance that embodies our rich culture. The best aspect of Diwali is that Indians across the globe celebrate it with the same enthusiasm.
