The auspicious occasion of Dhanteras is observed on the thirteenth day or Trayodashi tithi of the Krishna Paksha during the Kartik month according to the Hindu calendar. As per the Gregorian calendar, this pious occasion is celebrated around mid-October to November. The word 'Dhanteras' is a combination of two words- 'Dhan' meaning 'wealth or money' and 'Teras' meaning thirteen, which is why this occasion is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the Kartik month. Dhanteras is observed across the country one or two days before Diwali- the festival of lights.
As per Hindu mythology, Dhanteras is also considered to be auspicious. It is believed that on this day, during 'Samudra Manthan' (churning of the ocean), Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the sea with other treasures.
