Dhanteras Significance: A Brief Look

The auspicious occasion of Dhanteras is observed on the thirteenth day or Trayodashi tithi of the Krishna Paksha during the Kartik month according to the Hindu calendar. As per the Gregorian calendar, this pious occasion is celebrated around mid-October to November. The word 'Dhanteras' is a combination of two words- 'Dhan' meaning 'wealth or money' and 'Teras' meaning thirteen, which is why this occasion is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the Kartik month. Dhanteras is observed across the country one or two days before Diwali- the festival of lights.

As per Hindu mythology, Dhanteras is also considered to be auspicious. It is believed that on this day, during 'Samudra Manthan' (churning of the ocean), Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the sea with other treasures. As Dhanteras is a festival of wealth and prosperity, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Lord Kuber, who is known as the treasurer of the world, are worshipped by the devotees with complete devotion. On this auspicious day, devotees offer prayers to the divine Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber to seek blessings. They pray for their prosperity, wealth, success, and the well-being of their loved ones.

In some regions of India, Dhanteras is also celebrated as 'Dhanvantari Jayanti,' which is the birth anniversary of 'Dhanvantari,' the God of Ayurveda. Devotees worship Lord Dhanvantari as it is believed he helped humankind by imparting the knowledge and wisdom of Ayurveda to help cure horrible diseases.

Dhanteras and the Importance of Yama Deepam

On the evening of Dhanteras, there is a tradition of lighting diyas or lamps outside the house at the main entrance. This ritual of lighting thirteen diyas is done for Lord Yama or Yamraj, the God of Death. Women of the house should light the diyas for Lord Yamraj. It is believed that lighting a Diya will ward off all evils. It will also make Yamraj happy, and he will ensure that the untimely death of any family members is prevented. The lamps are a way to pay obeisance to Lord Yama. As per the Hindu tradition of Deep Daan or Deepam daan, the diyas should be kept through the night to honour the God of Death
