Dhanteras falls on the Trayodashi (13th day) of Krishna Paksha in the Kartik month. Though the Trayodashi starts on 22nd October 2022, the major portion of the 13th day is on 23rd October 2022. Hence, Dhanteras 2022 starts on the 22nd of October and continues the next day till the 23rd of October. The festival of Diwali falls two days after Dhanteras, i.e., on the Amavasya following Dhanteras.
Dhanteras combines two words, Dhan (signifying wealth) and Teras (meaning the 13th day). So, Hindus worship Kubera (God of wealth) and Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth) for wealth and prosperity on this day. Some regions also worship Lord Dhanwantri, the God of Ayurveda, for good health and long life during Dhanteras. Legend states that Dhanteras was the day when Lord Dhanwantri acquired the Amrit Kalash, or the pot of nectar, during the Saagar Manthan. Hence, this festival is also celebrated as Dhantrayodashi and Dhanwantri Jayanti.
There are many stories about Dhanteras, varying from region to region. Many places in India celebrate Dhanteras as Yama Trayodashi. The interesting story goes somewhat like this.
There once was an ancient king named Hima. The king had a son who was doomed to die of snakebite four days after his wedding. So, the king was worried. The newlywed bride of the prince had a smart idea to keep Yama (lord of death) at bay. She didn't let the prince sleep on that particular day and lit lamps and lanterns inside the palace. She placed heaps of jewels, gold and silver coins, and gems outside the prince’s sleeping chamber.
Yama came disguised as a snake to take the prince’s life. But he was dazzled and impressed by the display of wealth and lights in the palace. He sat on the heap of jewels and listened to the bride’s songs and stories the whole night. Yama slithered away silently in the morning without taking the prince’s soul. Hence, the tradition of purchasing gold and silver coins and ornaments started during Dhanteras.
Another story is connected to the Saagar Manthan or the legendary churning of the Milky Ocean. Lord Dhanwantri, the God of Ayurveda, emerged from the ocean holding the pot containing the nectar of immortality. So, Dhanteras is also celebrated as Dhanwantri Jayanti.
