After the nine days of joyous Navratri celebrations, Durga Visarjan is performed to bid farewell to Maa Durga. This ritual is usually done on Vijayadashami, though in some regions, it may be celebrated on Navami. In 2024, Durga Visarjan will be held on October 12th. Before performing the Visarjan, it's important to follow the proper rituals for the ‘Ghat’ and the items offered during Navratri. Here are the steps for conducting the Durga Visarjan puja:
Kanya Puja and Thanksgiving: After performing Kanya Puja, take some flowers and rice in your hands and thank the deities for accepting your prayers.
Kalash Prasad: Take the coconut from the kalash (ghat) as prasad, eat some, and share it with your family members.
Sacred Water: Remove the lid of the kalash, sprinkle some sacred water around your home, drink a little, and give some to your family. You can also use this water for bathing.
Coins for Prosperity: Take the coins from the kalash and store them in your money box for prosperity.
Betel Nut Prasad: Take the betel nut from the ghat and have it as prasad.
Goddess’s Throne: Carefully lift the sinhasan (throne) of the Goddess from the chowki and place it back in your puja room.
Ornaments and Sari: Collect the ornaments, sari, and other offerings made to the Goddess and give them to the women in your family.
Lord Ganesha’s Idol: Place Lord Ganesha’s idol back in its usual place in the puja room.
Prasad Sharing: Share the sweets and fruits offered during the puja as prasad with your family.
Rice for the Birds: Mix the rice from the chowki with the rice from the kalash’s lid and feed it to the birds.
Durga’s Picture: Return the picture or idol of Goddess Durga to its place in the puja room.
Barley Sprouts Offering: Offer some barley sprouts to the Goddess, and place the remaining sprouts under a Peepal tree or immerse them in water.
Donation: Donate one coconut, some money (dakshina), and the cloth from the chowki to a Brahmin or temple priest.
By performing these rituals with devotion and gratitude, you ensure that the blessings of Maa Durga continue to shower upon your household even after Navratri.
