The son of Lord Shankar, mother Parvati, and brother to Kartik Swami is the first to be revered by Ganapati Maharaj, whose vehicle is a mouse. During any auspicious event or a religious event, Ganapati Maharaj is worshiped first before anything else. Lord Ganpati is the only god who carries Laddu in his hands instead of weapons like other gods in Hindu mythology. Moon sighting is not performed on Ganesh Chaturthi. It is said that seeing the moon on this day creates a false flaw or a false stigma, due to which seeing the moon on this day may put a false stigma of theft.
Once Ganapati Ji was going from Dev Lok towards Kailash. Chandra Dev, who was there en route, started laughing on seeing Ganesh Ji and made fun of his big belly and the long trunk. Seeing all this, Ganpati Maharaj did not say anything and started walking. But Chandra Dev did not deter his act, and once again, he started ridiculing him. Lord Ganesha remained calm even at that time. Chandra Dev was in his arrogance, his ridicule was not coming to a stop. Observing all this, Ganesh Ji lost his temper, and he cursed Chandra Dev for crushing the pride of his appearance.
Ganesha said, “I curse you that on the day of Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi, no one in all the three worlds or lok ever will see your face, and if anyone accidentally sees your face, he/she too will be tarnished. On hearing the curse, Chandra Dev's pride melted, and he started trembling in fear. Apologizing to Ganapati Dev, he accepted that he had committed a crime and had no restraint on speech due to pride.
Chandra Dev started to regret his actions and started worrying about what could happen now. Post this inauspicious event, suddenly, darkness spread all over the world. The gods began to panic. Even Ganesh Ji felt bad that he cursed something really big for Chandra dev. Hence, he himself suggested a solution to cursed Chandradev in order to minimize its effect as it can’t be completely removed. As per the solution, Chandrdev has to observe fasting for Bhadrapad Chaturthi and offer naivedya to the lord.
This solution lets Chandradev thinner for 15 days to get disappeared and then grow gradually to become a full Moon. Hence, the concept of Purnima and Amavasya got conceptualized. Also, the person who sees the moon on the Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapaksha month will be tarnished, but he can remove obstacles by chanting Shri Ganeshaya Namah 108 times and offering Durva vermilion to Shri Ganapati to get rid of this stigma charge.
