Hariyali Teej - A Day to Worship Goddess Parvati

Hariyali Teej falls on the third day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan. It is also called as Shravani Teej and is celebrated mostly in North India. On this day, women observe fasts and pray to Goddess Parvati for conjugal bliss. Teej symbolises the renuion of Shiva and Parvati. On this day, women keep Nirjala Vrat (Fast without water). They break their fast after taking a bath the next morning. This year, Hariyali Teej is on July 23. Traditionally, on the occasion of Teej, swings are set up at various places like under the trees or in courtyards and women get together with their friends, sing songs and apply henna on their hands. Fares are also organised on the occasion of Teej and processions of Goddess Parvati are taken out with much fanfare.

Hariyali Teej Story

Lord Shiva told this story to Goddess Parvati to remind her about her previous birth. He told her that she was the daughter of Daksh Prajatpati in her previous life and she used to perform penance for Lord Shiva without bothering about eating or drinking anything. Even the weather didn’t matter to her, whether it was the rainy season or during the harsh summer, she continued with her tapasya. But her father Daksh got worried seeing his daughter in such a state. Once sage Narad came to Daksh and asked him for Parvati’s hand in marriage for Lord Vishnu. Daksh readily agreed and asked Narad to inform Lord Vishnu about the same.

But later, when Parvati heard this news, she was very upset as she had considered Lord Shiva as her husband. She confided in a friend who told her that she would take Parvati to a place in Himalayas where no one would be able to find her and she would be able to continue performing her penance there. When Daksh couldn’t find his daughter at home, he got worried thinking what would happen if Lord Vishnu came there to look for Parvati. Daksha sent his army to all the possible places in search of his daughter. On the day of Bhadrapada Shukla or Tritiya, Goddess Parvati prepared a Shivling from the sand near the river bank and stayed awake the whole night worshipping Lord Shiva. As a result of her worship, Lord Shiva appeared from the Shivling and asked Parvati for her wish. She told him that she wished to marry him and Lord Shiva granted her wish. Later, Daksh came to that place and asked Parvati as to why she left home. She told her father that she performed intense tapasya in order to get Lord Shiva as her husband, so now she would return home only when Daksh agrees for her marriage with Shiva. He relented and the marriage of Shiva and Parvati took place.

After narrating this story, Lord Shiva said “whoever observes Teej Vrat and worships me on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya would get my blessings to fulfill their wishes and desires.”

Women observe Nirjala fast and worship Shiva and Parvati. In the evening, they listen to the Vrat Katha.
