How Will The Stars Favor You On Maha Shivratri 2022?

Maha Shivratri 2022 date is the 1st of March, and devotees all around the globe are gearing up to celebrate the marriage of Lord Shiva to Goddess Parvati. Let us find out what each zodiac sign can expect from the astrological influence of this auspicious occasion!

Shiva, Shankara, Adi-Dev (the 'Oldest God), Svayambhu (Own creations), Bhole Nath, Rudra, Mahadeva, Neelkanth, and Kailashavasi are some of the names by which the destroyer in the Hindu mythology is known.

India, a country of festivals, has accepted Lord Shiva as the supreme power in all aspects.

As per Hindu mythology, Shiva is the destroyer, the beginning, and the end of the universe. He destroys only to herald a new creation. For these reasons, this auspicious day of Shivratri 2022 date is celebrated with so much enthusiasm all around the country.

Let us try to understand in greater detail how the grand celebrations of Lord Shiva’s marriage can influence our lives. But first, let us learn the significance of this day:

The Story Of Mahashivratri:

Devotees worship Shiva every lunar month, on the 14th day named Shivratri, to show their devotion towards him. As per the Hindu calendar, once every year, during late winter, Maha Shivratri celebrates the upcoming summer. Furthermore, Mahashivratri is supposed to be the night of union (marriage) of Shiva and Shakti.

Apart from this, there are many popular stories surrounding this festival.  For example, it is believed that on this night, Shiva performs his heavenly dance called ‘tandav’ in Natarajan form.

The second one details the importance of Shiva’s presence during the churning of the sea throughout the famous Samudra Manthan. A pot of toxic poison emerged out of the ocean during this incident. This poison had the potential to destroy the universe. Lord Shiva drank the poison to save the earth and the other forms of matter and energy.

It is believed that due to this poison, his throat appears blue, and that’s why he is often called Neelkanth. For this reason, on the occasion of Maha Shivratri, devotees drop water plus other liquids (like milk, sandal, kapurs, gangajal, ghee, etc.) on the Shiva lingam to ease his suffering from the poison.

A similar story narrates that once a tribal man was collecting woods in the forest and due to certain circumstances, he stayed that night on the bilva tree. He accidentally dropped the bilva leaves on  Shiva Lingam kept near the tree as he chanted Shiva’s name till the morning. Lord Shiva was satisfied with his devotion and blessed him. After that, this myth justifies the popular tradition of offering bilva leaves to Shiva on this propitious occasion.

Another myth states that Goddess Ganga was unleashed from heaven in full force, and it was Lord Shiva who trapped her in his hairs and released the flow of water in slow-motion to prevent the destruction of Earth. On this day, there is thus the tradition of bathing the Shiva linga with Ganga Jal.

Why Is Mahashivratri So Important?

According to the scriptures, on the day of Maha Shivratri, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu searched hard to discover the Aadi (beginning) and the Antha (end) of Lord Shiva. On the fourteenth day, during the dark night in the month of Phalguna, Lord Shiva established himself in the form of a Linga for the first time. It is since that day that we celebrate this auspicious day of Shiva’s origin as the grand night of Lord Shiva or Maha Shivratri.

In South India too, there is a lot of enthusiasm among devotees on this day. There is a tradition where many devotees wear auspicious green-colored clothes and visit the nearest Shiva temple to offer prayers to the Shiva Linga and observe Shivratri fasting.

Furthermore, Goddess Parvati is considered a daughter of the mountains since she was born to king Himavan according to the Kashmiri customs. For this reason, Shiva is considered a son-in-law by the Hindu community in this region. On Maha Shivaratri night, a special ritual called Herath is performed, where a grand reception of the procession of Lord Shiva’s baaraat is held. This custom is very different from other cultures. It's called 'Herath' in Kashmiri, a word derived from the Sanskrit word 'Hararatri', which means the 'night of Hara' (another name of Shiva).

Maha Shivratri is also considered promising for more important reasons like releasing the bad karmas, wanting salvation (Moksha), completing the birth and death cycle. It is for these reasons that married men and women pray for marital blessings and prosperous family life while single or unmarried girls pray for being blessed with an ideal husband.

Astrological Significance of Mahashivratri

Shivratri is celebrated on Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha every month. However, the most special out of these twelve Shivratri is the monthly Shivratri that comes in the month of Falgun. In 2022, this festival will be celebrated on 1st March.
