The world of astrology is fascinating and deep.
As a beginner, it might look like having a grasp of your Sun sign is the end of the story. But the truth is—it’s not even the beginning.
If you want to explore astrology in-depth, an understanding of the natal chart is non-negotiable. Fortunately, this blog is all about it.
So, join us as we decipher the ins and outs of the natal chart and familiarize you with its significance. Let’s start!
Also known as the birth chart, a natal chart is basically the map of a person’s life.
It encaptures the exact positions of the celestial bodies at the day, time, and location of one’s birth.
In Vedic astrology, the natal chart is a particularly important document because it reveals an individual’s big three—the sun sign, the moon sign, and the rising sign. But apart from this, it also tells a lot about other core aspects of their life, such as their personality, relationships, career, destiny, and so on.
In Vedic astrology, a natal chart is made up of three elements—9 planets, 12 houses, and 12 zodiac signs.
Seeing it for the first time can feel overwhelming—after all, it consists of way too many components. But don’t worry. You only need to pay attention to the following few aspects of your birth chart to find out whatever you need to know—your strengths, weaknesses, future, etc.
Your big three, which are your sun sign, rising sign, as well as moon sign.
Your strongest and your weakest planets.
The placement of each of the 9 planets within each of the 12 zodiac signs and 12 houses.
The pattern created by each of the planets.
The “aspects” or “angles” created between two planets.
The average elemental aura of your chart, i.e., the element whose influence is the most in your chart—fire, water, air, or earth.
The overall composition or nature of your chart—i.e., figuring out whether it’s fixed, cardinal, or mutable and the balance of qualities in your chart.
Planets that are in harmony with each other and the planets which are clashing with each other.

Also known as synastry, birth chart compatibility refers to understanding the intensity of harmony between two individuals’ natal charts. It can be done to assess mutual compatibility on different levels. For instance, here’s how you can figure out the romantic compatibility between you and your partner through your birth charts.
Start by checking the compatibility of your Sun sign and your partner's. This also includes checking the compatibility of the elements of your zodiac signs. It tells whether the relationship will be sound or not.
Now, evaluate the compatibility of your ascendant and descendant signs. They reveal the amount of physical attraction and what you need in a partner.
Assess your Moon signs. Generally, if two persons' Moon signs are the same, they are considered to be soulmates.
Check the position of Venus and Mars in your charts. They represent love, physical compatibility, attraction, and other important elements of a romantic relationship. If the planetary alignments overlap with each other, it means you are bound to be together.
Check the house overlays of you and your partner, and inspect where the planets fall in each other's houses. Particularly, pay close attention to the planets in the 5th and 7th house of your natal charts and see how compatible they are. These houses rule pleasure, sex, and desire in a relationship.
Examine the transit of Saturn in your charts. If the planet is transiting to the 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, or 10th house while you two are in a relationship, it means you have high compatibility with each other.
Lastly, check your lunar nodes. Generally, when two persons’ lunar nodes overlap, it means they are a match made in heaven.
