This cricket league was officially started by the BCCI or the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 2008. Prior to the IPL 2022, there have been fourteen seasons of the IPL tournament.

The IPL is usually held between March and May every year. The fifteenth edition of Tata IPL 2022 has been scheduled to begin from 26th March 2022 (Saturday) and conclude with the final on 29th May 2022 (Sunday).
With the introduction of the new teams, a ten-team format has been created, where the teams will be facing each other. This time the format consists of seventy-four T20 matches. A total of seventy league matches and four playoff matches will be played during IPL 2022. The ten teams of IPL 2022 have been divided into two groups- Group A and Group B. In the group, each team will play each other twice and once against the teams from the other group. This is followed by everyone, except for the remaining team, against which they will play two times.

Along with the Tata IPL matches schedule being announced by the BCCI, it is also announced that the league stage matches will be held in Mumbai and Pune. Overall, as per the IPL 2022 schedule with venue, twenty matches each will be held at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium. On the other hand, fifteen matches each will be held at Brabourne and MCA International Stadium, Pune. There will also be twelve double headers. The IPL playoffs schedule and the venue for the IPL 2022 final to be held on 29th May 2022 will be announced later.
In the opening game of the fifteenth season, the first blockbuster match of IPL 2022 will be between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 26th March 2022 (Sunday).
