Among them, the one occasion that is the most important for married women is the fast that falls in the month of Kartik on the Chaturthi Tithi of Krishna Paksha. This occasion is called Karva Chauth. Karva Chauth is a significant festival celebrated by married women. On this day, married women observe a day-long fast without water.

Karva Chauth Significance

It is believed by Hindus that if married women fast on this day, it helps in prolonging the life of their husbands. Additionally, many unmarried girls also observe the Karva Chauth fast to pray for a good husband. Karva Chauth is not just a regular fast; it is the festival to strengthen the sacred relationship between a husband and wife.

During the day of Karva Chauth, women pass the day listening to the mythological stories. But as soon as the Sun sets, they wait with bated breath for the Moon to appear. In the scriptures, the Moon is considered the symbol of age, happiness, and peace. This is why worshipping the Moon makes the married life blissful and prolongs the husband's life. When the Moon is sighted, the terraces become a live spectacle. Karva Chauth Rules

Make sure to gather all the needed materials a day in advance. On the day of Karva Chauth, wake up in Brahma Muhurta and take a bath. Wear clean clothes and get ready for the occasion. On this day, worshipping the Karva and worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is the norm.

On Karva Chauth, women go without food or water from before the sunrise till the Moon comes out. Once the Moon is sighted, only then the fast can be broken. In the evening, approximately an hour before the moonrise, the entire divine Shiva family (Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya) is worshipped. It is believed that while worshipping, the person who has kept fast should be facing the East. As the women don't consume water the whole day, once they see their husband through the chalni or sieve on which a lamp is placed, the husband breaks the wife's fast by making her drink water.

Know About the Karva Chauth Ritual

An essential part of the Karva Chauth ritual is sargi. The mothers-in-law prepare traditional sweet and savoury dishes and present the plate or thaali of sargi to their daughters-in-law on this occasion. The sargi plate includes kheer, sevaiyaan, feni, matthri, fruits, and nuts. They have the sargi early in the morning before the sunrise. After eating this, they do not consume food or water for the entire day.

Retire from your routine work early in the morning, and take a sankalp (oath) and start the Karwa Chauth vrat (fast).
To do your karwa chauth vrat vidhi properly, make sure not to drink water while fasting.
After taking a bath in the morning, start the Karva Chauth fast by taking a Sankalp (oath).
At the time of the morning worship (puja), begin the fast by chanting the mantra. The mantra is- “Mama Sukha Soubhagya Putra Pootradi Susthira Sri Praptya Karak Chaturthi Vratham Karishyate.”
Put ochre on the wall of the temple of your house and grind the rice. Then used the liquefied rice solution to draw on the Karva. This ritual is called the Karva Dharna.
In the evening, take the idol of Lord Ganesha and place him in the lap of the idol of Goddess Parvati and place them on a wooden pedestal.
Adorn Goddess Parvati with all the adornments which a married woman wears.
Worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Also, fill water in the Kore Karva and worship it.
The married women should observe the fast for the whole day and listen to the Karva Chauth Vrat Katha (story).
When the moonrises, the wife first sees the Moon using a sieve. Then she looks at her husband from the same sieve and prays for his well-being and long life.
Once you have sighted the Moon in the evening, consume the water and food offered to you by your husband.
End the fast by taking the blessings of your husband and in-laws.
