Karwa Chauth is a celebration of the love and the bond between a husband and wife. It falls every year on the Chaturthi Tithi or fourth day of Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the Moon) of Kartik month, according to the Purnimanta Hindu Calendar. According to the Amanta calendar, followed in Southern India, Karwa Chauth is celebrated during Ashwin month. However, you should know that only the month's name differs in different states, but Karwa Chauth is celebrated on the same day.
On this one-day festival, married women observe a day-long strict fast for the long life and protection of their husbands. It is believed that by observing this occasion, married women can ensure that their husbands lead a happy life. Hindus believe that if married women observe a fast on Karwa Chauth, also known as 'Karak Chaturthi' in some places, it helps prolong the life of their husbands and bring happiness into their lives. Furthermore, unmarried girls also observe the Karwa Chauth fast to pray for a good husband. In Hindi, 'Karwa' or 'Karak' means 'pot', and 'Chauth' denotes 'fourth day'. The earthen pot is used to make the water offerings to the Moon.
On the day of Karwa Chauth, womenfolk spent the day listening to the mythological stories associated with the occasion. The women who are observing the fast wait for the Moon to appear. They worship the Moon once it appears, and then they take the first bite of food from their husband's hand. Therefore, this also becomes a romantic occasion that symbolises the love and the eternal bond between a husband and wife.

Karwa Chauth Rituals You Should Know About
The fast that one observes for Karwa Chauth is indeed difficult as one cannot consume food or drink water during the course of the fast. This strict fast is kept by married women from sunrise to moonrise for the longevity and welfare of their husbands.
As mentioned above, the Karwa or Karak refers to the earthen pot through which water is offered, known as 'Argha', to the Moon. The Karwa is considered to be quite significant for Karwa Chauth Puja. It is given to any eligible woman in the family or a Brahmin as 'Dan' (donation) after the Puja.
In the evening of this day, one hour before the moonrise, married women worship Lord Shiva and his entire family, i.e., Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya. While worshipping, the person who has kept the fast should be facing East. Women observing the fast can break the fast only after sighting the Moon. As soon as the women see their husbands through the chalni (sieve) on which a lamp is placed, their husbands break their fast by making them drink water.
An essential part of the Karwa Chauth ritual is 'sargi'. 'Sargi' is a platter or 'thali containing various traditional sweet and savoury dishes. Sargi contains kheer, dry fruits, sevaiyaan, matthri, fruits, coconuts, etc. Women consume the sargi after taking a bath in the early hours of the morning. After eating this, the women do not consume food or water for the entire day. It is believed to be a healthy meal that enables them to stay without food or water for the whole day. The mother-in-law prepares and presents the sargi to their daughter-in-law on Karwa Chauth.
When it comes to observing the fast and worshipping of Karwa Chauth, you should follow the right method. Given below is the method for the Puja.
On this day, take a bath, wear fresh clothes, and get ready for the occasion. Before sunrise, clean the place of worship. After this, consume the sargi given by the mother-in-law. Then, the women should take a Sankalp (oath) and start the Karwa Chauth fast. Begin the fast by chanting this mantra- "Mama Sukha Soubhagya Putra Pootradi Susthira Sri Praptya Karak Chaturthi Vratham Karishyate."
Post sunrise, women observe a Nirjala Vrat, i.e., a fast without consuming even a drop of water.
Put ochre on the wall of the place where you will worship. Then grind the rice to make a liquefied rice solution to draw on the Karwa. This ritual is known as the Karwa Dharna.
Make Goddess Gauri out of the yellow clay and place Lord Ganesha on the lap of the idol of Goddess Gauri or Goddess Parvati. Set all the idols on a Chowki (wooden pedestal). Then adorn Goddess Parvati with all the adornments like Chunri, etc., which a married woman wears.
Keep the lamps, incense sticks, sandalwood, vermilion, and other materials required for the Puja on a plate.
Worship Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha. Also, fill water in the Karwa, draw a swastika on the Karwa with Roli, and worship it.
After the Puja, the Karwa should be given as charity to a Brahmin or some eligible woman. The Karwa should be filled with water, and coins should be dropped in it.
The married women should observe the fast with diligence and listen to the Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha (story).
When the Moon rises, women should worship the Moon. The Moon should be seen with the help of a sieve, and Argha should be offered. After this, she should look at her husband from the same sieve and pray for his well-being and welfare.
Once the woman has sighted the Moon, she can break her fast.
