Everything That Makes Dhanteras Special

Traditionally, Dhanteras is dedicated to the worship of Lord Dhanvantari, who is considered the God of Ayurveda. Dhanvantari, the heavenly physician, was the one who brought Nectar out of the ocean during the Samudra Manthan. Between the Devas and the Asuras, he is known to be the God of Ayurveda as he propounded the knowledge of medicinal herbs and their effects and imparted the wisdom of Ayurveda for humankind's improvement.

This day also marks one more important event, which is the origin of Goddess Lakshmi. Goddess Lakshmi is known as the divine Goddess of wealth, knowledge, and purity. She originated as one of the fourteen jewels created out of the Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the ocean. Hence, worshiping her and Lord Dhanvantri can deliver you good health and wealth on this day.

As Dhanteras marks the first day of the five-day Diwali extravaganza, this day is significant to please the divine Goddess Lakshmi, as the word 'Dhan' in Dhanteras means monetary wealth. The Goddess is invited home with all her grace, as she is believed to descend upon Earth on the night of Diwali. This is why all cleanliness and whitewashing of people's homes are usually finished a day before Dhanteras.
On the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras 2023, buying silver utensils and gold jewelry is considered auspicious. Overall, purchasing a house is also regarded as promising on this day.

Where to Keep Diyas on Dhanteras?

One of the important Dhanteras 2023 rituals is the lighting of the 13 Diyas during the evening. Typically, it is customary to light 13 Diyas on Dhanteras. Earthen clay Diyas and Mustard oil are used for this ritual. You would be surprised to know that each of these Diyas has a particular significance.

These 13 Diyas should be placed at different places in the house, such as at the entrance, in the kitchen, and in the Puja room or Mandir. Each Diya has its own specific meaning and importance in your life.

Let’s find out the importance of the 13 Diyas.

  1. The first Diya is lit near the garbage outside the house facing the South when the entire family is assembled at home. This is also known as 'Yama ka Deepak'. It wards off death if untimely death is among the family members.  Simply put, it safeguards the family from unexpected death.

  2. The second Diya should be lit with Ghee near the Puja place or Mandir of the home. It bestows happiness and peace in the family and also ushers in good luck.

  3. The third Diya should be lit before Goddess Lakshmi to gain her blessings for wealth, abundance, and prosperity.

  4. The fourth Diya should be lit near the Tulsi plant at home. It brings happiness and fortune to the family.

  5. The fifth Diya should be lit near the main entrance door of the home. It is known to ward off negativity and sorrow and welcome joy and love into your house.

  6. The sixth Diya should be lit near a Peepal tree. Peepal represents Jupiter (Brihaspati), and lighting a Desi Ghee-filled Diya yields health and monetary prosperity for you.

  7. The seventh Diya should be lit in a temple near your house. This should be another temple of Mandir than your worshiping place at home.

  8. The eighth Diya should be lit near the trash to ward off negativity.

  9. The ninth Diya should be lit near the washroom to ward off negativity and sorrow from the home. It also helps to maintain a peaceful energy flow throughout your home.

  10. The tenth Diya should be lit on the roof of the home to gain protection from negative energies.

  11. The eleventh Diya should be lit near a window at home to ward off negative energy. This Diya also spreads cheer and keeps the festive atmosphere intact.

  12. The twelfth Diya should be lit on the terrace to ward off negative energies. It also celebrates the festive mood.

  13. The thirteenth Diya should be lit near the crossroads or intersection of your house to keep negative energies and evil spirits at bay.
