Nag Panchami is an important traditional festival celebrated in the diverse land of India with great fervour. Nag Panchami falls in the auspicious month of Shravan, and undoubtedly, this is a unique festival. As per the Hindu calendar, the auspicious Nag Panchami falls on the Panchami Tithi (5th day) of the Shukla Paksha during Shravan. Significance of Nag Panchami

Nag Panchami is a significant Hindu festival wherein people worship snakes. The term ‘Nag’ means snakes or serpents, and ‘Panchami’ means the fifth day. This important and holy day falls on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan. This is why the festival is called Nag Panchami. This particular festival is celebrated in India and Nepal.

Snakes and their importance have been mentioned and highlighted in many Hindu scriptures such as Agni Purana, Mahabharata, Skanda Purana, and Narada Purana. In Hindu mythology, snakes have always occupied a significant place. They are associated with important deities, like the divine Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. As per Hindu mythology, the world rests on the head of the Sheshnag or the snake with the six heads. Snakes are also given respect and importance because they are closely associated with Lord Shiva. Rituals Done on Nag Panchami

Let’s get to know what all rituals are associated with this auspicious festival.

On this auspicious day, take a bath early in the morning and observe fast. After this, you can put a picture of Nag Devta or Serpent God, or make a snake out of clay or cow dung, and place it in your place of worship. It is also placed at the door of the house to ward off evil.
Offer flowers, water, sandalwood, kumkum, rice, sindoor (vermillion), bel patra, turmeric, incense sticks and diya to the Serpent God and worship the deity. Make Panchamrit by mixing milk, curd, ghee, sugar, and honey and offer it to the deity. After that, perform an aarti of Nag Devta and read the story behind Nag Panchami. You should pray to the Snake God for happiness, security, and peace in your house. After the Puja, you can offer the milk or kheer as Prasad that you offered to the Gods to your family members and friends.
A remarkable feature of this auspicious occasion is that women devotees offer milk to snakes. Many devotees throng the temples to offer milk to the Snake God. It is commonly believed that by offering milk to snakes on this auspicious occasion, devotees can attain Akshaya-Punya. People also believed that worshipping Nag Devta can increase the sources of money.
Devotees who observe fast on this day only consume fruits and light vegetarian food. Devotees also consume milk. Even the Prasad offered to God on this day contains milk. Milk is the most common offering on this auspicious occasion.
As part of the festivities, many devotees visit a temple, where they give a reverential bath with milk and water to a Nag or Serpent deity’s statue or a painting of the snakes. Then they light incense sticks and diyas and pray to Nag Devta for the welfare of their family.

Apart from the rituals mentioned above, devotees also partake in other practices. On this particular day, some devotees worship snakes by visiting the trees and anthills or places where snakes can be found. Milk is also placed in fields that are infested by snakes. Women devotees also offer milk, flowers, and sweets to actual snakes, with the assistance of snake charmers with the belief that their prayers will reach the Serpent God. Women devotees do this to seek protection from evil and divine blessings. They pray for their family’s well-being on this day.
