Significance of Ram Navami

Lord Rama, who became king of Ayodhya, was renowned for his exemplary qualities. It is widely believed that Lord Vishnu was born on the earth as a son to the King of Ayodhya, Dasharatha, to end the atrocities committed by the demons, especially the demon king Ravana. Ravan had been granted a boon of invincibility against Gods, so Lord Vishnu was sent as a human. Lord Rama killed Ravana in order to maintain Dharma on Earth. He was the epitome of how to live life in accordance with 'Dharma'.

The story of Lord Rama's birth is a catalyst that sets the ball rolling towards the events that led to the ultimate triumph of good over evil, which can be seen in the epic Ramayana. So, the  Shri Ram Navmi celebrates the victory of 'Dharma' over 'Adharma'.

Rama Navami is associated with the appearance of Lord Rama in his mighty divine form and human form. This auspicious festival is celebrated with deep reverence across India, particularly in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, the birthplace of Lord Rama. Fasting is done on Rama Navami, as it signifies the purification of body and mind.

Rituals Associated with Ram Navami

Before Rama Navami, Hindus observe a nine-day fast on the occasion of Chaitra Navratri. During this time, devotees focus on praying and meditation for detoxification of the body while abstaining from alcohol, smoking, and non-vegetarian food.

On Ram Navmi, devotees get up early. After bathing, they offer water to the Sun God, who is believed to be Lord Rama's ancestor. Devotees offer prayer to the Sun God early in the morning. This is because it is commonly believed that Lord Rama's dynasty descended from the Raghu Kula or Raghuvamsa. Raghu stands for the Sun, which is why Lord Rama is known as Raghunath or Raghupati.

Thousands of worshippers visit temples dedicated to Lord Rama. The temples are beautifully decorated, and images of baby Rama are placed in small 'Jhoolas' (cradles). The continuous recital of the Shri Ramacharitamanas starts a day earlier and culminates at noon on Ram Navmi, which is considered to be the time of Lord Rama's birth.

At noon, a conch is blown auspiciously to mark the moment of Lord Rama's birth. The idol of Lord Rama is bathed and dressed in finery. Devotees place flowers at the Lord's feet and then rock the cradle.

People also decorate the small temples in their homes. Some devotees also give a ceremonial noth to the small statues of Lord Rama in his infancy. They adorn him and then place Lord Rama in a cradle. People also adorn the statues of Goddess Sita, Lord Lakshman, and Lord Hanuman. Flowers, fruits, and incense sticks are offered.

Bhajans and Kirtans are performed at people's homes, temples, or religious sites dedicated to Lord Rama.

On the ninth day, Ayodhya and other cities in India are immersed in prayer and festivity. Devotees bathe in the Saryu River on this occasion. This is supposed to purify devotees' body and soul.

In Southern India, devotees celebrate this festival as the day Lord Rama and Goddess Sita got married, symbolizing the love between husband and wife.

Ram Navami celebrations include reciting the great Indian epic, the Ramayana, and staging plays known as Ram Lila. Ram Lila encapsulates the story of Lord Rama's life.

Conclusion

The festival of Ram Navami is an opportune period for all devotees to immerse themselves in the spirit of Lord Rama. While worshiping, devotees pray for themselves and their families and aim to imbibe the qualities of Lord Rama by becoming virtuous and good.
