Significance of Sharad Purnima

It is believed that on the night of Sharad Purnima, Goddess Lakshmi comes out to wander and offers her blessings to her devotees. The auspicious occasion of Sharad Purnima is dedicated to the divine Goddess Lakshmi. It is believed that if you worship Goddess Lakshmi on this day, you can attain her blessings, and there will be no dearth of wealth in your life. Devotees observe Sharad Purnima vrat (fast) and worship Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of prosperity and wealth.

The Purnima or full Moon of the Shukla Paksha of the Ashwin month is no ordinary day. The moonlight is the brightest on this day. It is believed that on the day of Sharad Purnima, the Moon shines in its full glory with all sixteen Kalas. According to the scriptures, religious ceremonies or rituals performed on this day give better results. On Sharad Purnima, the Moon is incredibly close to the Earth. Thus, it is commonly believed that the chemical elements falling from the Moon are imbued with positivity, and whoever receives it becomes more positive. According to the scriptures, the Moon's rays on this day also have the miraculous ability to cure diseases.

 

Know the Sharad Purnima Puja Ritual

Given below is the complete method of doing the Sharad Purnima Puja ritual for Sharad Purnima 2021-

  • On the auspicious day of Sharad Purnima, wake up in the Brahma Muhurta in the morning and take a bath in a holy river.

  • Once done, lay a red cloth on a Chowki. After that, place the idol or a picture of Goddess Lakshmi on it. Then, offer red flowers, Naivedya, perfume, and other fragrant things to Goddess Lakshmi. Adorn the divine Goddess with beautiful clothes, jewellery, and other adornments. Offer the divine Goddess Aavahana, Asana, Achman, Clothing, Scent, Akshat, Flowers, Dhoop (Incense sticks), Deep (Lamp), Naivedya, Betel nut, Dakshina, etc. and worship her.

  • Once you have offered all these things, recite the mantra of Goddess Lakshmi and the Lakshmi Chalisa. Worship Goddess Lakshmi with incense and deep (lamp). Remember also to do aarti of Goddess Lakshmi.

  • After this, offer Kheer to Goddess Lakshmi. Also, remember to donate Kheer to a Brahmin on this day.

  • Prepare the Kheer from cow’s milk. Add Ghee and sugar to it. Offer this as Bhog to the divine Goddess at midnight.

  • At night, when the Moon is situated in the middle of the sky, worship Chandra Dev and offer Naivedya made of kheer.

  • Keep a utensil filled with Kheer under the moonlight at night and eat it the next day. On the next day, this should be distributed like Prasad and shared with the whole family.

  • Make sure to listen to the Katha (story) while on Sharad Purnima vrat (fasting). Before the Katha, put water in a Kalash, put wheat in a glass, as well as roli and rice on a leaf plate, and worship the Kalash. Once done, offer Dakshina.

  • On this auspicious day, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Kartikeya are also worshipped. 

 

Importance of Kheer on Sharad Purnima

The practice of having Kheer on Sharad Purnima is widely popular. People believe that Sharad Purnima's moonlight has special significance. According to Mythological belief, on the night of Sharad Purnima, drops of nectar fall from the Moon, which is believed to contain various healing properties. This is why people make Kheer and keep it on their terraces or out in the open under the moonlight. This same Kheer is then eaten the next day in the morning as Prasad to gain the miraculous nectar's benefits. It is said that eating the Kheer kept in the moonlight increases your body's ability to fight against diseases. People with respiratory issues also benefit a lot from eating this Kheer.
