Shukra Astha – End Of the Indian Wedding Season

Weddings are occasions that everyone waits for and this is one of the life-turning events for the bride and groom. The family from both sides pray everything goes well - right from the arrangements, the function to the most important, ‘ever after happy married life’ for the new couple.

Vedic astrologers suggest that this very important ceremony should take place only on days that are considered auspicious according to the ‘Panchang’. There are, though, some dates, like the ‘auspicious Akshaya Tritiya’, which doesn’t need approval of an astrologer. If a marriage takes place on an inauspicious day, the couple could face worry and problems through their wedded life and may also face separation.

As the year comes to an end, so do the auspicious days for marriage. While 14 December was the last auspicious day for the year 2017, there will now be a full stop on auspicious days till February 3,  2018.

Let us understand why some days are considered to be inauspicious.

‘Khar Mass’, also called ‘Mal Mass’ is inauspicious for marriages

The planet Sun, enters and stays in the Dhanu Rashi (Sagittarius) for a month. This period of time is called the “Dhanu Mal Mass”, which starts from 15 December, 2017. During this time, any auspicious occasion, like, marriage, engagement, ‘Grah Pravesh, buying new property etc , is considered unfavourable.

According to Indian scriptures, during this period, the horses that pull the Sun God’s chariot, are in resting phase and their job is taken over by donkeys. For this reason, the sun is not as bright as in other months.

But since the Sun is in Dhanu Rashi, which is ruled by ‘Guru’ or ‘Brihaspati’(Jupiter) and may not be auspicious for marriage, it is the ideal time to concentrate on learning. So, anything to do with education, will stand you in good stead. Also, worship of Lord Vishnu, Sun God, Lord Shiva and Devi Chandi can be done for prosperity.

Commencement of marriage season from 3 February 2018

Those eager to get married can now plan from 3rd February onwards. Till then the planet Venus, which is most crucial for favourable marriages, is too close to the Sun. A planet being too close to the Sun is referred to as “Taara Doobna”. While other planets being too close to the sun may not matter for marriages, it is the Planet Venus that is taken into consideration while zeroing onto dates for this occasion.

Some alternative dates

As mentioned before, while Hindu culture highly recommends marriage ceremony to take place on auspicious dates, there are some dates which are generally auspicious for all kinds of events. ‘Makar Sankranti’, which falls on 14 January and ‘Basant Panchami’ which falls on 22 January, are considered auspicious for marriages too.

In addition, Hindu culture also considers looking at the zodiac signs of the couple to determine their compatibility and find out a date for marriage accordingly. An astrologer will calculate and find a few suitable dates based on the groom’s astrological position in relation to the moon and the bride’s; in relation to the sun.
