India has got a glorious past, something which all Indians are proud about. But the glory and brilliance of our ancient civilization and culture which still resonates reached it’s zenith between c.1500 – c. 500 BCE, which is known as the ‘Vedic era’. This period is called the ‘Knowledge Era’ as it is believed that all the knowledge one looks for in this World, is in the four Vedas: Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and the Atharva Veda. The four Vedas compiled knowledge of the great saints who introduced a spiritual perspective to all sciences.
Vedas have emphasized the importance of holistic living, especially through Ayurveda and Vedic Astrology. What is happening nowadays is that we miss the point of life, and indulge too much into our daily affairs. There is no time to zoom out and understand the holistic perspective of life. Ayurveda guides us on how to live healthy and also helps us understand our body well.Vedic astrology, on the other hand, helps us to understand our destiny and the factors which affect our emotions and character. While it may appear to us that both these deal with different aspects of human life, the truth is that these closely affect each other.
Inter-relation between Ayurveda and Astrology-
Some scholars consider Ayurveda to be the fifth Veda. Ayurveda emphasizes on the understanding of your body type or Doshas(Whether Kapha, Vata or Pitta) and following a lifestyle conducive to that. It follows a simple principle of keeping diseases at bay with the help of natural herbs and correct diet.
Rig Veda also introduced the world to Astrology(Jyotish Vidya). ‘Jyotish’, the science of light, tells about the planetary movements and its effect on the personality traits of a man. Each of the nine planets that affect the individual’s health, correspond to certain organs or body parts. If the planets are placed in a benefic position on the birth chart, they will spell health and if in malefic position, they can cause diseases or injuries.
Thus, both Ayurveda and Astrology are interrelated and should be understood together to understand the problems arising in a body(Astrology) and how to follow the correct lifestyle so as to reduce a disease to the minimum(Ayurveda).
The three Doshas, Kapha, Vata, and Pitta correspond to the same elements; earth and water, air and fire respectively, just as the twelve zodiac signs are divided into four houses based on those elements.
Thus, the element Air, represents the zodiac signs, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius and are effected by the planets Mercury, Saturn, Venus(secondary) and Rahu.
When a person with any ailment approaches an Ayurvedic doctor for relief, the doctor will first find out the Dosha of the person and link the disease to the Dosha. He will then check the birth horoscope of the person and find out the malefic planet responsible for it.
For example, if the moon, which represents the mind, is in the malefic position in one’s horoscope, it will result in diseases such as insomnia, hallucinations, fear of water or animals. While allopathy may treat this with medicines, Ayurveda will suggest a natural remedy.
To live in harmony with the cosmos, one should understand his body functioning (Ayurveda) and the purpose his soul has come to fulfill in its earthly form (Astrology). How the Cosmos will affect you and how you should react to it wisely, is what Vedas teach us.
