Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Chaturthi, is celebrated every month, four days after the New moon (Shukla paksha chaturthi). The loveable elephant God, Lord Ganesh is worshipped on this day. In Bhadrapada month, the worshipping turns into a festivity extending for 10 days, which is celebrated most in Maharashtra and Goa.
Through the year, Lord Ganesh is worshipped every month on the fourth day after the Full Moon of the Lunar calendar. This day is also called ‘Sankata Hara Chaturthi’.(Sankat means Problems and Hara means Removal) since Lord Ganesh is considered to be the removal of all obstacles and worshipped at the beginning of any new project. When this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called ‘Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi’ and is the most important of all the Chaturthis.
The uniqueness of these Chaturthis is that; there is a different Sankashti Ganapati Prayer performed for each Chaturthi of the month. Lord Ganesh has a different name for each Chaturthi and a different ‘peeta’(Base on which Ganesha idol would be seated).

On Sankata Hara Chaturthi, devotees fast from morning and eat only after the moon is sighted. They first worship Lord Ganesha and then look at the moon and break their fast.
