Washing Off Your Sins at Har Ki Pauri

The river Ganges is considered very sacred as per Indian mythology and is often referred to as Mother Ganges. The belief is that if one takes bath in this sacred river then all sins are washed off. While that can be easily understood to be a myth, the point that many believe is that if one takes bath in the Ganges with the promise that they will never commit further sin, they would surely find a way to free themselves of their previous sin.


A single dip in the Ganges is considered to be the sure prescription to attain ultimate salvation, and if it is at the sacred Har Ki Pauri ghat in Haridwar, then one can rid the soul of all negative powers of not just this life but many births and lives together. So what exactly is special about this Har Ki Pauri ghat and why does it hold such significance?


Location Significance

The Har Ki Pauri ghat is situated on the banks of River Ganges at Haridwar in India’s Uttarakhand state. A major landmark in India’s religious capital, Haridwar it means the steps of Lord Shiva. In the Vedic times, it is believed that Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu visited the Brahmakund in Har Ki Pauri. Geographically this spot is essentially believed to be the point where the Ganges enters the plain land from the mountains.


Historical Background

Not just in our mythology but also our overall ancient history is etched by many incidents that bring forth the special significance of this sacred spot. It is also said that the famous King Vikramaditya built this ghat in memory of his brother Bharthari.


Delving deeper into our mythology also reveals that when Lord Vishwakarma was carrying the pot of divine nectar to heaven after the churning of the oceans, a few drops from it trickled down on Earth at precisely this spot.  That is why when devotees take bath in this spot, not only are their sins washed off but also their wishes come true.


The big footprint imprinted on the walls of this ghat is believed to be Lord Vishnu’s. Located on the western banks of Ganges, it attracts millions of visitor everyday and every evening, especially during twilight when the Ganga Aarti ritual is performed. Millions of lamps are lighted on its banks in tribute to Ganges as devotees offer their prayers, and they set forth on their small leaf boats creating a visual feast for the onlookers. As millions of lighted clay lamps make their way silently, the night sky lights up the pious Ganga magically. This spot is also considered sacred for other rituals like shaving of the head and washing away the ashes of the dead.


It is also amongst the many sacred spots in India where the world famous Kumbh Mela is organized every twelve years.


How To reach Har Ki Pauri Ghat?

Haridwar is easily accessible by air, rail and road.  The closest airport is the Jolly Grant airstrip and is situated about 20 kms from the Har Ki pauri ghat. It has direct road links as well from Delhi and all other parts of the country. The Haridwar railways and bus stations are also located at a convenient distance from the ghat.
