The Chinese system of astrology is used effectively by millions around the world to get insights about their future. This has been around for centuries, supporting and guiding people through troubled times.
The Chinese Zodiac originated in the Han Dynasty(202BC - 220AD). Each of the animals used for depicting the signs, were carefully studied for their unique characteristics, traits and habits, comparing them with humans. Each animal was also related to an earthly branch.
According to mythology, the animals in the zodiac were chosen by God. He commanded all creatures to participate in a race and the first 12 to cross the finishing line, were awarded signs in the Chinese zodiac.
Chinese horoscope 2018 is based on the Chinese zodiac( Sheng Xiao; which roughly translates to ‘Born resembling’), which is a repeating cycle of 12 years based on 12 animals. The 12 animals in order are; Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig and each animal represent one year.
This year, 2018, is the 'Year of the Dog'. It starts from the Chinese New Year on 16th of February 2018 and will end on the Lunar's New Year's Eve, the 4th of February, 2019; after which the Year of Pig starts. Some Chinese Dog Years were 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 and after 2018, the next Year of Dog will fall on 2030.
The personality of people born in the same year, is similar to the ‘personality’ of the animal the year represents. For example, the people born in the years 1984, 1996, 2008 etc represent the Rat and are honest, hard-working, love their freedom, but can be ruthless, selfish, controlling and scheming.
12 is important for the Chinese, as in olden days; a 12-hour system was used to tell the time of day and night and each had a sign of the zodiac. For example, 11:00 PM to 1:00 AM was the hour of the Rat; 1:00 AM to 3:00 AM was the hour of the Ox etc .Since the Chinese observed that there were 12 full Moons in a year, they also related their predictions to astrology. So based on the Lunar Calendar, each month begins with a New Moon and lasts for 29 or 30 days.
Even the directions were named after the zodiac animals: For example, North was Rat; North-Northeast was Ox.
While Western astrology is based on the position and movement of planets relative to the Earth, Chinese astrology decides the character and traits of a person, his destiny and relationships, based on the animal he represents.
