According to Indian Vedic astrology, ‘Rahu Kaal’ or ‘Rahukalam’ is referred to a certain period of time that occurs everyday which is considered inauspicious for any new venture. It is one of the 8 segments of a day. The term originates from 2 Sanskrit words- ‘Rahu’, which is the name of an astrological planet, and ‘Kalam’ which means time.
This time is especially followed by South Indians, mainly in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
During Rahu Kaal, it is believed that Rahu ‘envelops’ or ‘covers’ the mind, causing it to ‘go blind’, and so, the mind doesn't think clearly. Hence, this is why Rahu Kaal is considered inauspicious.

The time period for each segment is calculated by taking the total time between sunrise and sunset, at a given place, and then dividing the final number by 8.
Rahu Kaal is believed to last for 90 minutes everyday, though the duration differs according to the length of the time between sunrise and sunset.
Since the planet Rahu is considered as a malefic planet, its time is also considered inauspicious, individuals usually do not undertake any auspicious or important work during this time period. It is believed to yield negative results, lack of success, or could even suffer postponement. So, people tend to avoid signing new documents or agreements, not undertake any new journey (be it long or short distance), marriage ceremonies, moving into a new house, going to an interview etc.

Of course this doesn't apply if the activity/ event started before the Rahu Kaal.
When the daylight lasts for 12 hours, and sunrise is at 6am, the following durations of Rahu Kaal can be considered. However, for days which may be longer or shorter, the times should be adjusted before being followed. And this time durations may also differ according to different geographical locations.
Monday- 7.30-9.00 (i.e. the 2nd part of the day)
Tuesday- 15.00-16.30 (i.e. the 7th part of the day)
Wednesday- 12.00-13.30 (i.e. the 5th part of the day)
Thursday- 13.30-1500 (i.e. the 6th part of the day)
Friday-10.30-12.00 (i.e. the 4th part of the day)
Saturday- 9.00- 10.30 (i.e. the 3rd part of the day)
Sunday- 16.30-18.00 (i.e. the 8th part of the day)
Rahu Kaal is supposed to have the most impact on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
Not only does Rahu Kaal vary across different regions, and different days, it is even influenced by different transits that may occur in any year.
Along with Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda Kaal, and Vishaghati are also considered inauspicious time segments during a day.
To counter the effects of Rahu Kaal, one can perform Puja or Yajna related to Rahu. You can even wear Hessonite, which is called Rahu’s Gemstone, or other gemstones (which would be given to you according to your birth chart), and one can even worship Rahu Yantra, though it can be time- consuming and will require effort.
