Bhadrapada 2019 - The Month Of Lord Krishna Begins

According to Hindu Panchang, Bhadon or Bhadrapada is the sixth month of the year. This year, Bhadra begins from August 16, 2019 and ends on September 13. This month, which comes after Sawan is known as Lord Krishna’s month. Krishna was born as the eighth incarnation of lord Vishnu on Krishna Paksha (eighth day of the dark fortnight) in the month of Bhadon under Rohini Nakshatra. Some important festivals fall in the month of Bhadon. They are as follows:

 

 

Kajari Teej - Kajli Teej or Kajari Teej falls on Krishna Paksh Tritiya and on this day, women perform sacred puja of neem and sing songs in honor of Lord Krishna. This year, Kajli Teej is on August 18. It is celebrated with a lot of fanfare in some parts of Rajasthan and holds a lot of significance for the married couples; it is believed to strenghten the ties between the couple. In Rajasthan, Teej processions takes place on this day; Goddess Parvati is carried in a palanquin and taken to the streets.

 

Janmashtami - Janmashtami, the birth of Lord Krishna is celebrated with great ardour in India. This year, Janmashtami is on August 24. Devotees observe fasts throughout the day which is broken only at midnight after aarti and offering of the prasad to Lord Krishna. Temples are also beautifully decorated on this day and many cultural programs and activities such as Raslila are performed to celebrate the birth of Krishna. In Mathura, the birth place of Krishna, the celebrations are on a much grander scale.

 

Ganesh Chaturthi - Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha Chaturthi. This year, it falls on September 2. Lord Ganesha, the God of knowledge, wealth, wisdom and new beginnings is worshipped on this day. People observe fasts and offer Modak ladoo to Lord Ganesha. It is said that one shouldn’t look at the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi especially those who are observing fasts.

 

Parsva Ekadashi - Bhadrapada Shukla Parsva Ekadashi is known as Dev Jhulni or Parsva Ekadashi. On this day, people fast and worship the Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu. Vishnu is seated in a palanquin (palki) and a shobha yatra is carried out; the idol of Lord Vishu is also given a bath outside the temple. This year, it will be celebrated on September 9.

 

Anant Chaturdashi - Anant Chaturdashi falls on September 12, 2019. It is observed on the fourteenth day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada and it is also the last day of the 10 day Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Lord Anant (Vishnu) is worshipped on this day, devotees chant Om Anantay Namoh Namaha and eat only once a day.
