According to the Hindu Calendar, the festival of Devutthana Ekadashi is celebrated in the month of Kartik on Ekadashi or the 11th lunar day, during the period of Shukla Paksha. The Shukla Paksha is the first fortnight between New Moon Day and Full Moon Day. As per the Gregorian calendar, the pious occasion falls around October and November. All the Ekadashis have their importance in mythological texts, but one cannot deny that this Ekadashi of the Kartik Shukla Paksha is particularly lucky. 'Dev Uthani' means to wake God or Dev up, and 'Ekadashi' means the 11th day. Therefore, the auspicious occasion of Devutthana Ekadashi is the day on which rituals are performed to wake up Lord Vishnu. This Ekadashi comes after the festival of Diwali. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu had spent years without sleeping as he was fulfilling his duty of destroying evil and blessing his devotees. This schedule had a drastic effect on his sleeping pattern and resulted in him falling asleep almost suddenly for many years. Lord Vishnu's irregular sleep patterns disturbed Goddess Lakshmi, his consort. She requested Lord Vishnu to regularise his sleep so that she can get her required rest. Lord Vishnu, realising that he is disturbing Goddess Lakshmi along with the other Gods, decided to sleep for four months every year. Therefore, it is commonly believed that the divine Lord Vishnu goes to sleep on Dev Shayani Ekadashi in Ashadh month, i.e., around June and July, and wakes up on Devutthana Ekadashi in the month of Kartik.
As per religious beliefs, during the four months, no auspicious tasks are performed. From Devutthana Ekadashi, all auspicious and sacred activities begin again. The day of Devutthana Ekadashi also marks the beginning of the marriage season. The four months from Shayani Ekadashi to Devutthana Ekadashi is considered inauspicious for marriages, engagement ceremonies, or other sacred functions. This is why people wait till Devutthana Ekadashi to begin the important ceremonies.

People believe that the divine Lord Vishnu resides in the houses of those who worship him and offer him prayers with utmost dedication and reverence. Worshiping Lord Vishnu on this day means that his blessings will be bestowed on your whole family. The Devutthana Ekadashi rituals are as follows:
On the day of Devutthana Ekadashi, devotees perform a day-long Devutthana Ekadashi vrat or fast for Lord Vishnu. You should take a vow for the fast in the morning and recite or ruminate the name of Lord Vishnu. Devotees believe that keeping a fast for this occasion can clear away the sins of their past lives.
On the day, you should take a bath, wear clean clothes, and draw the feet of Lord Vishnu in the courtyard of your house.
Draw the picture of Lord Vishnu on an Okhli (Pounder or Mortar) and fill it with sugarcane, water chestnut (Singhara), jujube, seasonal fruits, and sweets. After that, cover it with a lid.
On this particular day, devotees light earthen-lamps (diyas) outside their homes and in temples.
All the family members should worship all Gods and Goddesses alongside Lord Vishnu during the night time.
After that, wake up Lord Vishnu by ringing bells and blowing the conch (shankh). The devotees should chant the following Mantra while invoking the deity- “Utho Deva, Batho Deva, Aanguria Chatkao Deva, Nayi Soot, Nayi Kapas, Deva Uthaye Kartik Masa.”
This auspicious occasion also marks the beginning of the sugarcane harvest. Freshly-cut sugarcane is used in the Devutthana Ekadashi rituals and offered to the Gods as it is believed to be auspicious. Tulsi Vivah (marriage) ceremony is also performed on Devutthana Ekadashi. In this customary practice, a marriage of the Tulsi (Basil) plant with Lord Vishnu is performed. As per Hindu scriptures, the Tulsi sapling is considered the reincarnation of a woman named 'Vrinda', Lord Vishnu's ardent devotee. The marriage ceremony of the Tulsi plant to Shaligram (incarnation of Vishnu) is performed on Devutthana Ekadashi. This occasion marks the beginning of the auspicious period that is known to be ideal for Hindu marriages. On this day, once the fast is observed and sugarcane, fruits, etc., are offered to Lord Vishnu, this ceremonial marriage takes place. After this, the fast is finally broken on the next day.
