Significance of Dhanteras

The festival of Dhanteras usually falls one or two days before Diwali every year. This festival has special significance and importance in Hinduism. The word 'Dhanteras' is made up of two words, wherein the first word 'Dhan' means wealth or money, and 'teras' signifies the thirteenth day. This festival is known as the festival of wealth. On this day, it is considered auspicious for people to shop for gold, silver, jewellery, utensils, etc.

On the auspicious day of Dhanteras, divine Goddess Lakshmi, who is known as the Goddess of wealth, is worshipped. As per mythological beliefs, worshipping Goddess Lakshmi will not cause you any shortage of money and grain. Along with Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Dhanvantari and Lord Kubera should also be worshipped as per the norm. Lord Dhanvantari is known as the healer of the gods or the God of Vaidya as per Hinduism beliefs. Additionally, he is known as the greatest physician of the universe and the founder of Ayurveda. Lord Dhanvantari is considered as a form or avatar of Lord Vishnu. He is depicted as holding an urn full of nectar in one hand. His favourite metal is brass, which is why people buy brass items on Dhanteras. On the other hand, Lord Kubera is the God of wealth and is known as the connoisseur of wealth.

Dhanteras and the Importance of Yama Deepam Daan

On the evening of Dhanteras, you should light diyas or lamps outside the house. These lamps are kept with their flame facing southwards. The lamps are believed to be lit for Yamraj, the God of Death. Women of the house should light 13 diyas for Lord Yamraj. The lamps will make Lord Yamraj happy, and he will offer his blessings that will protect you and your entire family from untimely or premature death. This lamp becomes a symbol of the flame of the family always burning, thus extinguishing the fear of premature death. The lamps are kept throughout the night as the Hindu tradition of deep daan or deepam daan to honour the God of Death.

On Dhanteras, Lord Ganesha should be worshipped first. Before worshipping, you should bathe the idol and anoint him with sandal paste. He should be placed on a red cloth, and then fresh flowers and sweet offerings should be offered to the idol of Lord Ganesha. Light diyas and incense and worship him. You should chant the mantra of Lord Ganesha and take his blessings before starting the Dhanteras rituals. The mantra that you should chant is-

“Vakra-Tunndda Maha-Kaaya Suurya-Kotti Samaprabha

Nirvighnam Kurume Deva Sarva-Karyeshu Sarvada”

  • Lord Dhanvantari

After that, Lord Dhanvantari is worshipped. People pray to him for the well-being and good health of their family. After the ritual of bathing and anointing the idol of Lord Dhanvantari with vermillion, you should offer him nine varieties of grains. Then you should chant the mantra given below-

  • Goddess Lakshmi

The apt time to do Goddess Lakshmi's Puja on Dhanteras is during the Pradosh Kaal. The Pradosh Kaal falls after sunset and lasts for around two and a half hours. Before you begin with the rituals, spread a piece of new cloth on a raised platform, and place a handful of grains in the centre of the cloth. Take a Kalash and fill it with water mixed with holy Gangajal, and put a betel nut, a coin, a flower, and some rice grains in it. You can keep mango leaves in the Kalash. Also, put a metal dish filled with rice grains on the Kalash.

A lotus is to be drawn with Haldi (turmeric) over the grains and then place the Goddess idol over it. The Lord Ganesha idol is also kept. Along with that, you can keep books related to your business or occupation near the idol of Goddess Laksmi. You should then light a lamp and begin the Puja by offering flowers, Haldi, vermillion to Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, and the Kalash. You should chant the following mantra-

“Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamale Kamalalaye Praseed Praseed Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Mahalakshmaye Namaha”

After this, place the Goddess idol on a plate and bathe it with water and Panchamrit (a mixture of curd, milk, ghee or butter, sugar, and honey). After that, offer the idol sandal paste, saffron paste, ittar (perfume), vermillion, Haldi, and gulal.  Also, offer fruits, sweets, and coconut and perform the Aarti. You and your entire family should worship the Goddess for success, happiness, and prosperity.
