Diversity in Palm Reading Across The World

Palmistry or Chiromancy is the ‘science’ of reading hands. Despite the common assumption and what the name suggests, it is not just the reading of the lines on the palm, but also of the shape of hands, fingers, the texture of skin, the mounds, the ridges etc. Since people use different methods of reading the hands throughout the World, there are conflicting interpretations of the various features involved.

Palmistry can tell about the person’s personality and character traits. Some Palmists specialize in telling about the person’s past or family history. Palmistry is not the best suited devolutionary method for an in-depth analysis about your future. The readings are very gross and generalized. Some readers concentrate on the ‘dominant hand’, which is the hand the person uses the most. They believe that this hand represents the conscious mind while the other hand is sub-conscious.

Palmistry in India is as old as the Vedas. It is called ‘Samudrika’ and focuses on discovering one’s nature to make him realize his potential. It can tell the person about his marriage compatibility and his career prospects. Emphasis is also on the smaller markings that may take the shape of a trident, bow, or serpent each representing certain aspect like wealth, status, fame etc.

It is believed that Palmistry spread to different parts of the World from India. Chinese palmistry considers the right hand of a woman and left of a man. Chinese palmists also consider hand prints for reading. Japan learned Chiromancy from China. Today, in Japan, palm reading is the most popular way of reading one’s fate. They refer to the 3 major lines as the lines of Heaven, Man, and Earth while all the fingers relate to different family members. The Oriental and Indian Palmistry, basically gives the same result, except they use a different lingo.

Today, most of the Palmists follow the Western approach to Chiromancy, which, the die-hard critics believe, does not go into the details and is shallow. The Western approach seems simpler and easily understood even by the layman.

It studies the shape of the hand, the lines of the hand, the mounts or mounds of the hand. Mounts are named after the Greek and Roman Gods. It became very popular with “Cheiro”s handbook “Palmistry of All”.
