There couldn't be a better start to the Year 2014, with the first Supermoon of the year falling on the very first day of the Year. But there's more, January will be host to two super new moons, the second Supermoon will occur on January 30, with the New Moon in Aquarius. And there wouldn't be two Supermoons in a month, not until January 2018. This is what makes January so special and the super month of the year.
So, what exactly is a Supermoon?
Supermoon, technically known as perigee-syzygy, is an astronomical phenomenon in which the Moon comes closest to the earth, which is why the name perigee-syngy (peri means close and gee means Earth in Greek). Astrologer Richard Nolle is credited with coining the term Supermoon, about 30 years ago. He defined it as "a new or full moon which occurs with the Moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit (perigee)." A Supermoon is around 14% larger and 30% brighter.
There is also a Micromoon, also known as apogee-syzygy, which occurs when the Moon is the most distant from the Earth.

July 12 - Full Moon in Capricorn
August 10 - Full Moon in Aquarius (the closest Supermoon of 2014)
September 9 - Full Moon in Pisces
