In the Puranas, this specific month is known as ‘Maasonam Margashirshoham,’ indicating that no month is more promising than the month of Margashirsha. This particular month is alluded to as the ‘Magsar,’ ‘Agrahayan,’ or ‘Agahan’ in the Hindu religious scriptures.
On this pious occasion, it is considered auspicious to take a bath in the holy waters of a sacred water body or river at a religious pilgrimage site. This is why devotees perform ritualistic baths in sacred rivers at religious and spiritual sites like Haridwar, Prayagraj, Banaras, etc. Devotees also worship the divine Lord Vishnu with utmost reverence and zeal. Lord Vishnu is worshipped as ‘Narayana’ on this particular day. Moreover, the devotees also worship the Moon God as it is widely believed that the Moon was blessed with Amrit on this day.

Margashirsha Purnima Rituals You Should Know About
Margashirsha Purnima Vrat(fast) is an integral part of the Margashirsha Purnima occasion. Devotees keep a day-long strict Vrat from sunrise to moonrise. It is believed that fasting on this specific day will grant all your desires or wishes. If the devotees worship this Vrat with complete faith and devotion, they will attain salvation in this birth. Worshipping Lord Vishnu also helps remove all obstacles and hurdles in your life and acquire success. Devotees also worship the Moon God and Sun God by offering them Arghya.
On Margashirsha Purnima, devotees wake up early in the morning and perform the ceremonious bath. It is believed that taking a sacred dip in the River Ganga can be very beneficial for the devotees.

Get up early in the morning and take a bath. You can take a bath by either taking a dip in a holy river or mixing holy river water in your bathing water.
The devotees should take a vow of fasting while meditating on God.
The devotees should wear white clothes after taking a bath. Then they should do Achaman (purification process before the Puja) before starting the worship.
After this, meditate on God and invoke Lord Hari or Lord Vishnu by chanting the mantra- ‘Om Namo Narayan.’
After this, offer flowers, perfume, etc., to the divine deity.
At the area or place of worship, build an altar for the Havan, and then perform the Havan by offering oil, ghee, etc., to the holy fire of the Yagya.
After the completion of the Havan, complete your fast with devotion and a sincere heart while ruminating on the name of Lord Vishnu.
The devotee should sleep close to the idol of Lord Vishnu at night.
On the next day of the Purnima, the devotees are advised to perform Dan-Dakshina that involves feeding Brahmins or needy people or doing charity according to one’s ability. The donations can be in the form of clothes, food, or money.
It is believed that offering donations on Margashirsha Purnima gives thirty-two times more benefits in comparison to any other day; therefore, the name ‘Battissi Purnima’ is used for the occasion.
On this occasion, special Prasad is also prepared and distributed among other devotees after doing Aarti. Devotees believe that fasting on this day and performing the Puja will help attain prosperity and happiness.

In South India especially, many customs are organized in the temples dedicated to Lord Dattatreya on the occasion of Margashirsha Purnima. Lord Dattatreya is regarded as the symbol of the Trimurti. According to mythological beliefs, Lord Dattatreya was incarnated on Earth during the Pradosh Kaal period on the auspicious day of Margashirsha Purnima.
