It is very easy to get a false picture in our head about something we do not know much about. We may just have heard fascinating stories about it or perhaps read about it. And, this is most common with religions or philosophies which we do not practice. Sadly, these misunderstandings is sometimes the sole reason for discrimination and prejudice too.

While it is quite noticeable that some monks and priests who are ardent followers of the Buddha do wear robes, however it is not compulsory for every Buddhist to wear robes.

While it is true that meditation is often identified as a part of an active Buddhist lifestyle. But in reality apart from the monks and priests, majority of the Buddhist population may not have meditated throughout history. Again the importance of meditation also depends largely on the sect of Buddhism that you adhere to.

This is a popular belief that Buddhist welcome suffering into their lives which is absolutely not true. But they try to take a positive approach towards handling problems and other hurdles. Yes, this is true! Buddhist believe in rebirth, however we should not confuse this with reincarnation. In rebirth, emotions and memories are not carried forward rather it is just a small imprint of all of these which is better known as karma.

This is a misconception as there are many different schools of Buddhism with different belief. It is less of a fixed set of beliefs coerced on people but a teaching which everyone and anyone can learn and use it in their own way.


Buddhism is extremely popular as a way of life rather than a religion because it explains a purpose to life. Its beliefs provide a code of practice, a way of life which can lead to true happiness.
