Chhat puja also popularly known as Dala Chhat or Surya Shasthi has been given similar importance as Karwa Chauth in various parts of India. Devotees from Bihar, Eastern UP, Jharkhand, Gujarat and some parts of Madhya Pradesh celebrate this festival with full faith and fervor. Flowers have always been an integral part of rituals involving prayers offered to God. Normally rose, marigold etc. are offered to deities, but in Indian culture Lotus has been given special significance. But do you know Lotus can help improve our relationships? Renowned Vastu and Feng Shui expert - Dr. Rupa Batra puts some light on it:
The biological name of Lotus or Sacred Lotus is Nelumbo Nucifera. It is the only flower which seems immensely beautiful once fully grown but its journey is not at all beautiful. It starts building its home under deep layers of standstill water, amidst mud, dirt, filth and fish. In short, very rough conditions. Our relationships in today’s world are quite similar. There is pretence, hatred, sorrow, anger, depression and specially ill-will. But the seeds of this godly flower germinate here itself, amidst all dirt.
Buddhists believe that lotus is a symbol of human fight towards attaining happiness by overcoming numerous problems in life, like the way Lotus grows to be super beautiful in spite of all the dirt and mud. It is an awakening, a true knowledge that the doors of heart always open inwards. Once we have our heart open, only then we can allow others to enter. We strongly keep the doors of our heart close with all the wrong facts, wrong notions, past incidents and experiences. This is the reason we never really bloom or rather stay happy. Lotus can be compared to an awakened mind, body and spirit. From the surface Lotus might appear delicate or fragile but it is extremely strong, sturdy and flexible in its roots. Meaning to say that a person might appear very weak when he or she humbly picks up phone and calls up his father, daughter or mother-in-law in spite of all chaos in their relationship, but deep down such people are very strong. They have the ability to move on, no matter what.
It is for this reason that most of the Hindu deities, especially Goddesses, are shown either sitting on the Lotus flower or holding Lotus flower in their hands. What’s the spiritual meaning behind it? It means that a person is considered to have divine qualities when, in spite of all the problems in life, he or she knows how to forgive and forget and how to move on.
“The lotus is the most beautiful flower, whose petals open one by one. But it will only grow in the mud. In order to grow and gain wisdom, first you must have the mud — the obstacles of life and its suffering. … The mud speaks of the common ground that humans share, no matter what our stations in life. … Whether we have it all or we have nothing, we are all faced with the same obstacles: sadness, loss, illness, dying and death. If we are to strive as human beings to gain more wisdom, more kindness and more compassion, we must have the intention to grow as a lotus and open each petal one by one. ”
