According to Hinduism, Purnima has a special place in the lives of all Hindu devotees. One cannot deny that it is an auspicious and important day. Read on to know the importance of Purnima and the date and time of the full moon days in 2022.

Full Moon day, or ‘Purnima’ as we know it more commonly, is considered highly auspicious in Hinduism. Not only in India, but the Full Moon is regarded as an important and wonderful occasion in many cultures all around the globe, making this an important day for many.

Purnima, meaning the ‘day or night of Full Moon,’ is when the Moon is fully illuminated in the sky. According to Hindu religious beliefs, the Full Moon days in India hold immense significance and are often treated as meaningful days.

Let’s dive into this topic.

Purnima: What Is It?

Purnima is a Sanskrit word, which means ‘Full Moon.’ According to the Lunar calendar, it refers to that particular day of the mouth when a Full Moon is present in the night sky. According to the Hindu calendar, every month can be divided into two equal parts. There are thirty Tithis in every month. The month is divided into two equal parts of fifteen days known as Shukla Paksha, which is the waxing phase of the Moon, and Krishna Paksha, which is the waning phase of the Moon, based on the phases of the Moon.

The first fifteen days are known as the Shukla Paksha, whereas the second slot of the last fifteen days is known as the Krishna Paksha. In each Paksha, a particular date is Purnima or Amavasya. Purnima is the division between the Shukla Paksha, i.e., the bright two weeks before the Full Moon, and Krishna Paksha, i.e., the dark two weeks after it. Purnima or the Full Moon night is the last day of Shukla Paksha. Purnima Tithi marks the beginning of the second slot of the last fifteen days of the month, known as Krishna Paksha. On the last day of the Krishna Paksha falls the Amavasya (no moon night).

Some prominent festivals or occasions associated with Purnima are Sharad Purnima, Guru Purnima, Holi, Vat Purnima, Hanuman Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, Dattatreya Jayanti, etc.

Significance And Importance of Purnima

Purnima is the day when darkness gives way to illumination, brightness, and light, and this is where the significance and importance of this day lies. Purnima or Puranmashi is commonly recognized as a day of abundance and marks the completion of a particular task. Purnima is a favorable time to perform and observe numerous significant religious rituals and spiritual activities. The spiritual activities and practices associated with Purnima are meant for releasing the negative energies around us.

The Moon completes one complete cycle around the Earth on the day of Purnima. This day is believed to signify birth and rebirth, making it an auspicious day. The last date of the Shukla Paksha is considered crucial as the Moon appears in its full size on the Full Moon night. According to Vedic astrology, the Moon is the Karaka of the mind. On the day of the Full Moon date, it holds a lot of influence on the mind. This is why many people worship the Moon God or Chandra Dev on the Full Moon day. It is said that offering prayers and worshipping the Moon with complete devotion can help fulfill all the desires and wishes the devotee has.

As mentioned earlier, Purnima holds immense significance from a religious point of view. It has a special place in Hinduism. This is why Hinduism and the Hindu Lunar calendar put a lot of emphasis on Purnima. The Purnima dates are regarded as suitable for observing religious vows and are considered good for worship.   |

Here are some of the religious activities performed on this day.

  • Fasting on the Full Moon day or the Purnima Vrat holds enormous significance in Hindu culture and traditions. Many devotees observe this fast to get the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Observing this fast is believed to help devotees attain success, peace, and happiness in their lives. The fast is also thought to make the devotees stronger and improve their metabolism. Whoever observes this fast is believed to become more stable and balanced, both physically and mentally. The Purnima Vrat or fast is kept either on the Purnima day or one day prior to Purnima, i.e., Chaturdashi. This depends on the beginning time of the Purnima Tithi on the previous day.
  • Purnima Vrat, or fast, commences with the sunrise and ends after the sighting of the Full Moon in the evening. The devotee has to observe a strict fast on this day and abstain from pulses, cereals, and salt. One offers prayers to the Moon with complete devotion to fulfill one’s wishes. If a devotee observes the fast with full faith and sincerity, they can attain Moksha.
  • As mentioned above, Purnima marks the end of each Hindu month. Usually, a significant and auspicious Hindu festival, occasion, or ritual is celebrated on this sacred day.
  • Many devotees also perform special Purnima Pujas. This celebrates a new beginning for an individual. Many people associate the Full Moon with new opportunities and chances to bring positive changes in their lives.
  • Apart from observing a fast, a large number of people also pray to various divine Gods and Goddesses on these days. Lord Vishnu's different forms and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped on this day. Moreover, Lord Shiva is also revered by some devotees. There is a tradition of performing a Puja in homes for Lord Satyanarayan, which is another form and name of Lord Vishnu. This Puja can maximize the devotee's efforts and absolve them of their past sins. It can bring happiness and prosperity into an individual's life. Doing Lord Satyanarayan's Puja is a way of attaining the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
  • According to the Bhavishya Purana, taking a holy bath at a sacred and religious site on the Full Moon day can destroy all your sins. If going to a pilgrimage site is not an option, you can take a bath at home by mixing Gangajal or the water from the Ganges in the bathing water.
  • On this day, some people chant the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra as it is commonly believed that doing so can help you achieve all your aspirations and dreams in life. It offers the devotees solutions to their problems and helps enable a healthy spirit, soul, body, and mind.
