Ramadan is the well-known ninth holy month of the Islamic Moon Calendar. During this auspicious time of Ramadan, Muslims all over the world keep fasts refraining themselves from eating and drinking starting from dawn till dusk. Each fast kept during Ramadan is called a ‘Roza’. Ramadan starts with sighting of the crescent moon (HILAL) and lasts for a period of one month. When the hilal is visible again at the end of the month, it is the time to celebrate Eid-Ul-Fitr (break the fast). Muslims believe Ramadan to be an auspicious month for the revelations of God to humankind, being the month in which the first verse of the “Quran” was revealed to Prophet Muhammad.
Ramadan is also the time when people take measures to strengthen their will power and also perform charity work. Spiritual cleansing and self-reformation is what everyone seeks to achieve. Prayers become a means to build a strong bond with God and good deeds are done to achieve enlightenment and peace.
Rozas kept during Ramadan are a way to seek forgiveness, mercy, and peace from Allah. During Ramadan, people believe in demonstrating full responsibility towards their every action and body parts. With their tongue, they refrain from telling a lie and talking behind the back. With their eyes, they are careful not to ignore any wrong doing. People are careful not to touch things belonging to others without seeking their permission. They refrain from listening to others’ conversations and also visiting any impure or lewd places. In this way, practicing self-control through Roza is not only a physical effort but also a mental and spiritual effort to connect with the almighty.
