Right Way to Fast for Karwa Chauth

Karva Chauth is a beautiful festival celebrated by Hindus, which falls in the cooler months of the year between Dussehra and Diwali. This year, Karva Chauth will fall on 17th October. The festival is for wedded women who keep a fast for their husband’s good health and long life.

On this day the wife gets up early in the morning before sunrise, bathes and washes her hair. Karwa Chauth is also a great occasion for these women to dress in their best. They dress up in the traditional Indian attire, usually a saree. Their traditional attire is incomplete without mangal sutra, bindi, sindoor, bangles and other jewelry as per the liking.

Consult the expert astrologers of Astroyogi for Pooja guidance this Karva Chauth.

Following another custom, after dressing up – well before dawn and offering prayers, women eat ‘Sargi’ – a festive breakfast including vermicelli. Sargi is specially prepared for this occasion by the fasting woman’s mother-in-law.

After eating the sargi, they fast for the whole day – without eating even a morsel of food, neither drinking a drop of water, from dawn till the moon rises.

After this, the woman is not allowed to even drink a sip of water till the time the moon rises in the night and she has seen it through a sieve. She then prays and can eat her meal after touching her husband’s feet and taking his blessings.

All this works wonderfully for the married women who would stay at home and enjoy being pampered by the house members, not asked to do any household work would just relax with mehndi applied on her hands and feet.

But, in case you are a working woman and are required to attend your office, fasting for Karwa chauth is altogether a different story for you.

So, here are some tips to make this great occasion easier and more enjoyable for you.

1.     Don’t leave any of your shopping for the last day. Finish getting your new clothes, bangles, sargi, sweets, fruits and whatever you need to give to your mother-in-law, at least 2 days before or preferably on a weekend. Finish applying the mehndi too. The colour of the mehndi is, anyway at its darkest after 2 days so it’ll look best on the day of the fast.

2.    Make your sargi the night before and in the morning, just heat it while saying your prayers. You save crucial time. Make sure your husband wakes up with you and breaks the coconut so you can drink that water. Do eat a pain-killer after you’ve finished eating. This is a big help in not getting a headache during the day.

3.    Try not to include too many sweets or anything fried (matthis) in your sargi or you will feel thirsty too soon. Eat more fruits. They keep you hydrated.
