The oldest living religion on Earth, Hinduism, follows varied systems of philosophy, belief and rituals, most of which is explained in a collection of ancient Sanskrit texts, The Upanishads. The Upanishads, along with the ideas of Hinduism, also contain mantras, the reciting of which, is supposed to calm the mind and bestow peace in the mind of the reciter.
These sacred texts also explain the correct method of reciting these “Peace mantras”, also called “Shanti Mantras”.
The Shanti Mantras are generally recited (in a sing-song manner) at the beginning and end of religious rituals as it is believed to remove any obstacles in the path of the task being started.

There are different Shanti Mantras for each of the Vedas and most end with the word ‘Shanti’, which is recited three times with a small pause in between each word, not for emphasising the word, but to remove the three types of disturbances, which are categorised as:
1)Aadhi-daivikam(Disturbances beyond our control like hurricanes)
2)Adhi-bhautikam(Disturbances partially under our control like ringing of phone[It can be switched off])
3)Adhyatmikam(Disturbances totally in our control, like anger, ego)
Some ‘Shanti Paaths’ from the Vedas and Upanishads, that are recited the most are:
ॐ द्यौः शान्तिरन्तरिक्षं शान्तिः
पृथिवी शान्तिरापः शान्तिरोषधयः शान्तिः ।
