According to the Hindu Lunar calendar, Phalguna month starts when the full moon day coincides with the North or East Phalguni star. Astrologically the east Phalguni star lies in Leo and north Phalguni star partly in Leo and Virgo.Venus is the ruling planet of east Phalguni star and Sun is the ruling planet of Uttara Phalguni star. The Phalguna month is the 12th lunar month in the hindu calendar. The major festivals and celebrations which fall in this month are: Vijay Ekadashi, Maha Shivratri, Holi ka dahan, Holi, and Amalaki Ekadashi.
Vijay ekadashi: Vijaya ekadashi falls on the 1st of March, 2019, the auspicious day comes in the Krishna paksha of Phalguni month according to the Hindu lunar calendar.The legend behind the festival says that Lord Sri Ram was able to demolish Ravana without any obstacle after the lord kept his fast and observed Vijay ekadashi. The fasting and celebrations pertain to cleansing yourself and avoiding obstacles which hinder your success.
Maha Shivratri:Shivaratri celebrates the convergence of Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakthi or Parvathi. It falls on the 4th of March 2019. This auspicious day is celebrated throughout India and Nepal. This festival also falls in the Krishna paksha half of the phalguna month. Chaturdashi Tithi in Krishna paksha during the Magha month is celebrated as Shivratri in the southern states of India.
Holi ka Dahan: Holi ka dahan is also known popularly as choti holi in many parts of India. It falls on the 20th of March, 2019. The legend says Lord Brahma gifted Holika the ability to withstand any harm from fire or never getting burnt in fire. Holika sat on fire with Prahlad in order to burn him in fire and let to death. It was Prahlad’s prayers to Lord Vishnu that saved him from burning in fire. It was the protective shawl of Holika that flew to cover Prahlad’s body from Holika who was having it. This is the story behind the celebration of Holika Dahan that is still followed by the people of India.
Holi: Holi is known as the second biggest festival after Diwali according to the Hindu calendar. It is also known as the festival of colours. While Holi is celebrated all throughout India the celebrations in the Braj region- Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Gokul, Nandgaon and Barsana where lord Krishna’s birth and major part of life was spent,is most famous for holi celebrations in India.
