President of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav is the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, who served from 2012 to 2017. He holds the record to be the youngest person ever to have held the office at the age of 38. He began his political journey when he was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha for the Kannauj constituency. He saw his second victory in the 2009 Lok Sabha by elections when he won by a margin of 67,301 votes against S.P.S Baghel of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
He was appointed as the leader of the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh on 10th March, 2012 following the Assembly elections in which his party on a total of 224 seats. Following this, on 15th March, 2012, he became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. On 1st January, 2017 he was elected the national president of the Samajwadi Party. Due to differences among his family and the constant criticism from his father, Akhilesh found himself in a rift with two sides being formed inside the party. In the 2017 Assembly elections, his party saw defeat due to this. But for the upcoming 2019 general elections, all the differences were dusted, so much so that the two rival parties of Uttar Pradesh Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party formed an alliance in order to defeat BJP and they were successful in doing so in the recently held Lok Sabha elections.
